Most ACC members know about Zarathushtra or Zoroaster, but since Iran's in the news, and the people are fighting to restore their Persian nation...

🟦 What Are Persians?
Persians are an Indo‑European people — meaning their ancient ancestors came from the same broad migratory family as Greeks, Romans, Indians, and many Europeans.

Zoroastrianism was the state religion of Persia until the Muslim conquest.
Search results confirm:
• Zoroastrianism was the religion of Greater Iran historically.
• It was the dominant religion in Persia from the 6th century BC until the Muslim conquest in the 7th century BC.
• It was the state religion of three Persian dynasties until the Arab invasion.
Key facts:
• Founded by Zoroaster (Zarathustra) around the 6th century BC.
• Centered on Ahura Mazda, the Wise Lord.
• Emphasized truth, order, and the cosmic struggle between good and evil.
• Fire temples and sacred flames were central symbols.
After the Arab conquest (633–651 AD), Islam gradually replaced Zoroastrianism, though small communities survive today in Iran and India (the Parsis).

Islam entered (and militarily conquered) Iran between 633–651 AD, and the Arabs who carried out the conquest came from the Arabian Peninsula—specifically the western and central regions known as the Hejaz and Najd.

633 AD — First Muslim incursions into Sasanian territory
• 637 AD — Fall of Ctesiphon, the Sasanian capital
• 642 AD — Decisive Battle of Nahavand (“Victory of Victories”)
• 651 AD — Death of Yazdegerd III, last Sasanian king; effective end of the empire
So the full process took about 18 years.

🕌 Where Did the Arabs Come From?
The armies that conquered Persia were from the Rashidun Caliphate, based in:
1. The Hejaz (Western Arabia)
• Medina — political center of the early Islamic state
• Mecca — religious center
This region produced most of the early Muslim leadership and military commanders.
2. The Najd (Central Arabia)
• Tribes from this region formed a large part of the fighting force.
3. Eastern Arabia (Bahrain, Yamama)
• Contributed additional tribal groups after the Ridda Wars.
In short:
They were Arab tribes from the Arabian Peninsula, not North Africa, not the Levant, not Mesopotamia.
Their homeland was the desert belt stretching from Mecca → Medina → central Arabia.
This is consistent with all major historical accounts of the early Muslim conquests

⚔️ Why Were They Able to Conquer Persia?
Sources highlight several factors:
• The Sasanian Empire was collapsing from decades of war with Byzantium
• Internal political chaos and rapid turnover of rulers
• Arab armies were highly mobile, lightly armored, and unified under a new religious-political movement
• Key battles (Qadisiyyah, Nahavand) broke Persian military power

Leading up to the 'Islamic Republic'

⭐ A. The White Revolution (1963 onward)
A massive top‑down modernization program:
• Land reform
• Expansion of women’s rights
• Literacy campaigns
• Industrialization
• Nationalization of forests and pastures
Problem:
These reforms disrupted traditional power structures—especially the clergy and landowners—without building political legitimacy.

C. Oil Wealth and Economic Volatility
• After the 1973 oil boom, Iran became extremely wealthy.
• The Shah pushed hyper‑rapid industrialization.
Consequences:
• Inflation
• Housing shortages
• Corruption
• A growing gap between rich and poor
• A sense that the Shah was out of touch with ordinary Iranians

🔥 B. Economic Crisis (1975–1978)
• Recession
• Inflation
• Unemployment
• Failed industrial megaprojects
• Corruption scandals
People blamed the Shah for mismanaging Iran’s oil wealth.

🔥 C. Political Missteps
• The Shah created a one‑party state in 1975 (Rastakhiz Party), forcing all Iranians to join or be considered traitors.
• He underestimated the opposition and overestimated his own popularity.
• He alternated between repression and concessions, pleasing no one.

🟥 4. The End
• January 16, 1979: The Shah leaves Iran “temporarily.”
• February 1, 1979: Khomeini returns from exile.
• February 11, 1979: The monarchy collapses; the Islamic Republic begins.

The Persian prophet and religious reformer Zarathushtra (flourished before the 6th century BC)—more widely known outside Iran as Zoroaster (the Greek form of his name)—is traditionally regarded as the founder of the religion. Zoroastrianism contains both monotheistic and dualistic features. It likely influenced the other major Western religions—JudaismChristianity, and Islam. For a discussion of the context in which Zoroastrianism arose, see ancient Iranian religion.

Zoroastrianism, ancient pre-Islamic religion of Iran that survives there in isolated areas and, more prosperously, in India, where the descendants of Zoroastrian Iranian (Persian) immigrants are known as Parsis, or Parsees.

Nature and significance

The ancient Greeks saw in Zoroastrianism the archetype of the dualistic view of the world and of human destiny. Zarathushtra was supposed to have instructed Pythagoras in Babylon and to have inspired the Chaldean doctrines of astrology and magic. It is likely that Zoroastrianism influenced the development of Judaism and the birth of Christianity. The Christians, following a Jewish tradition, identified Zoroaster with EzekielNimrodSethBalaam, and Baruch and even, through the latter, with Jesus Christ himself. On the other hand, as the presumed founder of astrology and magic, Zarathushtra could be considered the arch-heretic.

Though Zoroastrianism was never, even in the thinking of its founder, as insistently monotheistic as, for instance, Judaism or Islam, it does represent an original attempt at unifying under the worship of one supreme god a polytheistic religion comparable to those of the ancient Greeks, Latins, Indians, and other early peoples. Its other salient feature, namely dualism, was never understood in an absolute, rigorous fashion. Good and evil fight an unequal battle in which the former is assured of triumph. God’s omnipotence is thus only temporarily limited. In this struggle all human beings must enlist because of their capacity for free choice. They do so with soul and body, not against the body, for the opposition between good and evil is not the same as the one between spirit and matter. Contrary to the Christian or Manichaean (from Manichaeism—a Hellenistic dualistic religion founded by the Iranian prophet Mani) attitude, fasting and celibacy are proscribed except as part of the purificatory ritual. The human struggle has a negative aspect, nonetheless, in that it must strive for purity and avoid defilement by the forces of death, contact with dead matter, etc. Thus, Zoroastrian ethics, though in itself lofty and rational, has a ritual aspect that is all-pervading. On the whole, Zoroastrianism is optimistic and has remained so even through the hardship and oppression of its believers.
