We face some sobering truths: Violence against women is still rampant. Rape is written off as the victim’s fault. In Afghanistan and other countries, women are systematically stoned for alleged crimes like adultery. The global sex trade claims more than 30,000 lives a year, the vast majority women and children.
And the gender gap for equal pay persists; for every dollar a man earns, a woman earns 77 cents. Women comprise only 4.2% of the CEOS on the Fortune 500, and in the U.S. Senate, just 20 of the 100 senators are women.
CHANGE IS COMING
But even as you hear about the continuing oppression of women you can also feel the change coming, as demonstrated through:
- The One Billion Rising Movement
- Passage of the Violence Against Women Act
- The Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act
- The Break Time for Nursing Mothers Provision in the Fair Labor Standards Act
- Openly gay and lesbian politicians.
- Widespread public support for same-sex marriages
- Women comprise more than half of Rwanda’s parliament!
Those are just a few examples of the signs that are all around.
The world IS changing!
And if we really are the ones we’ve been waiting for . . . we are NOT waiting anymore!
