"The power is yours!"

Do you remember Captain Planet and the Planeteers ?Gaia, the spirit of the Earth, is awakened from a long sleep by human activity threatening ecosystems, taking place across the globe. Realizing that the damage is extensive, Gaia sends five magic rings, each with the power to control an element of nature and one controlling an extra element, heart, to five chosen youths across the globe: Kwame from Africa, Wheeler from North America, Linka from Soviet Union (changed to Eastern Europe after the Soviet Union's collapse), Gi from Asia and Ma-Ti from South America. These five are dubbed the Planeteers and given the task of defending the Earth in the case of the greatest of disasters and making effort to keep others from happening. Gaia uses her "Planet Vision" to discover where the most devastating destruction is occurring and sends the Planeteers to help solve the problem.Captain Planet reminds viewers of the message of the series with his catchphrase, "The power is yours!"The Planeteers summon him when the need arises and when the crisis is too great for them to handle."EARTH!""FIRE!""WIND!""WATER!""HEART!""Go Planet!""By your powers combined, I am Captain Planet!"Captain Planet, he's our heroGonna take pollution down to zeroHe's our powers magnifiedAnd he's fighting on the planet's sideCaptain Planet, he's our heroGonna take pollution down to zeroGonna help him put asunderBad guys who like to loot and plunder"You'll pay for this Captain Planet!"We're the PlaneteersYou can be one too'Cause saving our planet is the thing to do!Looting and polluting is not the wayHear what Captain Planet has to say!"The Power is Yours!"Hmm....people from all over the globe joining forces to save the Planet. In order to call for Cpt Planet, all of them must participate in the "asking", otherwise there is not enough energy to call for Cpt Planet.Does all of this remind you of something?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vo0D6bzxLLw&feature=relatedhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpXM9bj-WPUhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Planet_and_the_Planeteers

  • I have just watched the two trailers.

Now I know why we are unlikely to save the world from ourselves. Just continue to fantasize about a few heroes doing the work we ourselves are supposed to do.

Obviously the creators of the series have also been clearing a tidy income by exploiting the awareness that something is badly wrong with our global society.

  • I never heard of this series. Is it an American thing?
  • lmao, I've remembered Captain Planet right away when I saw the tag line. I love the series!
  • Sorry to be a wet blanket, but a romantic notion like this is not going to achieve practical results. The unromantic fact is that, we planeteers, are destructive through the way we are currently making a living on this planet.

To understand this, some basic economic literacy is required.

I know this seems a hard and discouraging request. That is because we have been indoctrinated to think that economics is an academic profession too complicated to be understood by ordinary people.

The truth is that economic literacy needs to be part of basic education: "The purpose of studying economics is... to learn how to avoid being deceived by economists."
    Joan Robinson, noted economist.

Bad economic ideas, driving bad economic practices, are destroying the earth's capacity to tolerate us: "Full Employment" is a bad economic idea because jobs cost the earth.

People need income, not jobs. Needed goods and services are mostly produced by machines with an ever decreasing need for people.

The power is ours. But what is the true power?

It lies in demanding the wages of machines not environment-polluting jobs/employment. Then we will be increasingly free from the "curse of Adam". We will have the personal and collective time and energy to care for and cherish the earth.

To start with read up on the the arguments for Basic Income (also known by many other names).

    We, together, are Captain Planet!

  • ha ha ha i use to watch that show i loved it then i still do now i am 37 years old.
