Honey hunters are based in the hilltop village of the Gurung tribe, in central Nepal's Kaski districtThe honey hunters use smoke, ladders and rope to precariously balance and stab at the honey to collect itHowever, the tribal way of life is in jeopardy due to decreasing bee populations and climate changeTribes are now facing a loss in their way of life, partly due to government intervention in honey exportsThe tribal leaders have also considered accepting tourists and harvesting out of season for short term monetary gainIn the foothills of the Nepalese Himalayas Rthe tribal elders of a mountain community risk their lives balancing on precarious ropes and ladders to harvest the honey from the hives of the world's largest honeybees.Dangling and winding their way up the mountain's steep cliffs, engulfed by thick black smoke which is used to ward off the bees, the elders stab at the hives to jostle honey out.Using another stick, he balances a basket to collect the chunks of honeycomb he's knocked off, before lowering it hundreds of feet to the waiting tribe below, from the remote hilltop village in central Nepal’s Kaski district, who are watching the ancient tradition which dates back to around 11,000 BC.Read More plus See Amazing Photos plus See Video @ http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2584541/Sticky-situation-The-amazing-honey-hunters-risk-lives-foothills-Himalayas-collect-honey-hives-worlds-largest-honeybees.htmlWHY HONEY IS NOT VEGAN ...This essay explains why vegans do not eat honey.By DefinitionThe simplest reason why honey isn't vegan is by definition. The term vegan was coined by Donald Watson in 1944 and was defined as follows:Veganism is a way of living which excludes all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, the animal kingdom, and includes a reverence for life. It applies to the practice of living on the products of the plant kingdom to the exclusion of flesh, fish, fowl, eggs, honey, animal milk and its derivatives, and encourages the use of alternatives for all commodities derived wholly or in part from animals (Stepaniak).People who follow a vegan diet for health or environmental reasons, please take note.We don't, however, need to go back to 1944 to define honey as not vegan. Any definition of veganism would talk about not exploiting animals, and honeybees (Apis mellifera) are, without a doubt, animals. Honeybees are in the phylum Arthropoda--the same as lobsters and crabs. So in addition to crustaceans, if honeybees don't merit respect, that would also leave earthworms vulnerable to dissection in biology classes. Similarly, iscallops, snails, and oysters would be fair game--they are not as "high up" on the evolutionary scale as bees. James and Carol Gould (respectively, a professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at Princeton and a full-time science writer) point out that "Honey bees are at the top of their part of the evolutionary tree, whereas humans are the most highly evolves species on our branch. To look at honeybees, then, is to see one of the two most elegant solutions to the challenges of life on our planet. More interesting, perhaps, than the many differences are the countless eerie parallels--convergent evolutionary answers to similar problems" (Gould, x). Of course, all this talk of higher and lower is fiction. Even Darwin reminded himself to "Never use the words higher and lower" (Dunayer, 13).READ MORE @ http://vegetus.org/honey/honey.htm

  • I WAS going to make a post about this last night, called Hallucinogen Honey Hunter, would be funny to see that on a name tag.

  • The vegans say that humans steal the honey from the bees as the honey is for the bees only.
Also if the honey is got by disturbing or hurting or harming the bees colony then it's out of order
    • What about the bears, Krishna?

      • honey belongs in the hives..................and bears , I will not judge a bear if he/she needs some. its their choice.

        • I have just added WHY HONEY IS NOT VEGAN... Knowing you are a dedicated vegan if you so wish add some more comments Michael
        • Yeah, no immune system boasting immortality honey for you then.
