The just announced Nobel prizes for both Chemistry & Physics have goneto research related to the Carbon atom. The Nobel Prize for Chemistrywent to three scientists for developing a toolkit to manipulate carbonatoms, while the Physics prize has gone to two Russian born physicistsfor their study on the remarkable properties of Graphene, an ultrathinform of Carbon.While announcing the Nobel Prize for Physics, the Royal Swedish Academy ofSciences stated, “Carbon, the basis of all known life on earth, hassurprised us once again.”They do not realize how loaded their statement is. For what we have seen inGraphene is only a small glimpse of the wonders that Carbon is capableof. I've found out that there is another isotope of carbon that is stable and maybe useful:
Carbon-13
Furthermore I've read that plants will accumulate the more of Carbon-13 the lower the levels of CO2 are in the air!
Because of this plants that grow in rain forests next to the sea level (CO2 with C-13 is slightly more heavy) usually contain significantly more of this rare Carbon isotope that makes only up to about 1% of all carbon on earth.
Exactly this might be the very reason why foods grown in such areas are so much more healthy then those grown elsewhere.
