I've had many experiences where Dogs that i've met for the first time were walking around my neighborhood with no owners around. they would be cauthious and bark at me and keep a distance of about 5 feet, then I would communicate with them that I am friendly and mean no harm by sitting down and extending my arm until they came up to me and smelled my hand, and after that they would be friendly and want to play.
there was another time where I was walking home and a dog walked out of my neighbor's yard, barked at me and kept a distance. I believe he wanted to see whether I was scared and would run away, or was hostile and would run after it. It would walk around me in a circle also, so I decided to walk in a circle the opposite way that the dog was, just to mimic his movement, I think this showed him that I wasn't afraid of him, and I wasn't hostile. It took forever for me to gain his trust though, this would go on for almost an hour until I decided to just walk home slowly, not too fast or he might mistake me for being afraid. but this went on for over a week every night until he finally gained my trust, but all he did was walk up to me smell my hand and walk away. He let me follow him but I ended up getting tired and going home.
Is body language the only way we can communicate with animals, or can they learn words, or can we communicate telepathically also?

Dogs and cats ....and indeed all animals, are psychic and telepathic.
listen to what they have to say with love and respect and there is a great deal of value and beauty to be heard and shared

enjoy
My dog communicates with me telepathically. I don't hear anything in my head that she says, but she looks at me with a long stare, and finally I get an idea that she wants. Its usually about food :))))) but also about opening a gate or a door - she really puts her mind into it. She is a guardian dog and quite intelligent. I think most dogs react, when we are strangers to them, to our fear that we carry in our energy bodies (not fear of them, but some of our negative emotions). Two great books you might be interested in is Suzanne Ward's book 'Communicating with Animals' (she speaks telepathically to them), and Turid Rugaas' book "On talking terms with dogs: Calming signals".
I like that you have spent time with dogs to find out how they feel.
Blessings
I don't really feel fear when around dogs, but I believe they could try to sense anger and hostility also, and when they don't sense anything negative coming from you I think that's when they just get curious and want to get to know you.
I'm a very observant person, and I've learned that I care about animals more than people. which might sound like a dark Cabal sort of thing but I've lost faith in Humanity, I'll share with them my knowledge and wisdom if they seek it but I don't really care what they do with it. I like dogs because they're loyal, and they don't try to take advantage of you and stab you in the back, so i'd rather protect a dog than a human, :P
I believe animals can read our moods.
i believe animals cannot understand us but that can pick up on the vibrations in our mouths and this helps their heart read what kind of energy he human is coming from. dogs are also very intuitive and can sense a person when their around. They can probably also see your aura.
