France became the first country in the world to legally require supermarkets to donate unsold food to charities and food banks. According to Zero Waste Europe, stores over 400 square meters must sign agreements with food banks or charities to redistribute unsold but safe-to-eat items. This includes fresh produce, packaged goods near expiration, and other surplus stock. The law also prohibits supermarkets from intentionally spoiling food, such as pouring bleach on discarded items.
This legislation has helped redirect millions of meals to people in need and inspired similar policies across Europe. It has since expanded to include large-scale catering services and food manufacturers, making France a global leader in food waste reduction. According to Organic Authority, the law enables charities to distribute millions of additional meals each year, significantly improving food access for vulnerable populations.
