What is an open mind?

I think it is a high time for people to replace empty minds with open ones. But unfortunately, some donnot even seem to understand what an open mind is! Specificaly, there are two misconceptions.1.) THE UNDECIDED MINDThis might be what I am calling it an EMPTY MIND. He has no idea nor opinion. If someone say the earth is flat, he says errr... hmmm, I think it is indead flat. When another come and say it is round, he says hmmm...errr, I think you are correct! Then he says I think both are correct!2.)THE CONFUSED MINDThis is the guy who seems to beleive that everything is right and everything is wrong! It is the guy who beleives that everything is possible, even things that are mutualy exclusive. He says I am immortal. If another guy comes and say you will die, he says that is also possible! This is not an open mind, this is a confused mind!THE OPEN MINDIt is simply if he has n ideas at time t1, then at time t2, he will have n+1 ideas! This might look simple but not many people are such. Most people have a bible type of minds. When they hear of a new idea, they only check if it is found written in their bibles. If not, they either say the idea is wrong or they have no use of it!While this mean open mindedness leads to expansion of knowledge, ironicaly, some of the most narrow minded people in the world are scientists, i.e those who claim to seek for more knowledge.A good example is when the idea that the aurora in the earth poles are due to partcles comming from the sun. Scientist rejected it so much that the proposer commited suicide! It was latter discovered that it was infact correct!Many people have what I may term INTERLECTUAL INERTIA. This is worsen when people subdivide themselves into groups. There are 3 examples of such groups.1)scientists3)religious4)new agersWhen people rearange themselves in such extreem groups, quite lots of ideas are axed from them. Present an idea to a scientist and he says yuck, this is too religious and new agy. Present the same idea to the religious and they say this is too scientific and new agy. Present the same idea to new agers and they say this is too scientific and religious. Non take time to exermine what you are saying. All kick it away!

Great post...I had to sit back and think about what kind of mind I actually have....I think I am about 3/4 open minded, kind of a shade of gray more or less. I thought at first I was very open minded, but then on actual reflection I thought well I am open to a lot of new ideas and concepts, etc, but don't actually believe in a lot of things that others do... I also do not put myself in a category such as scientist, religious or new ager, because I do not fit in any category. Definitely I am not your typical new ager, that much I have figured out, as I reject a lot of stuff that many new agers seem to believe in, and I believe in a lot of stuff that scientists would poo-poo, and have perspectives that many do not have because of my own personal experiences with abduction that the vast majority of the populous do not have due to being fortunate enough not to have had the experiences I did. So I guess in some areas I am very open minded because of necessity, but in other areas which I have not any experiences I tend to be less open minded. Just throwing my thoughts on this subject out here....

Great post...I had to sit back and think about what kind of mind I actually have....I think I am about 3/4 open minded, kind of a shade of gray more or less. I thought at first I was very open minded, but then on actual reflection I thought well I am open to a lot of new ideas and concepts, etc, but don't actually believe in a lot of things that others do... I also do not put myself in a category such as scientist, religious or new ager, because I do not fit in any category.
