Dear Anne,
All you guys talk about meatless diets, but don't we need some form of protien: ie beans/cheese/rice? I have no clue where to start or if I need to supplement because of the no meat thing.
Can you share your meatless diet secrets with those of us who have always loved meat but don't want to kill animals anymore? I'd sure appreciate the help. I want to be in the first wave. ~ Jennifer
Jennifer, I stopped eating red meat when I was 29. I recognized the fact that I would not be able to kill the animal ... I just purchased packaged pieces from the the killer of animals. I had to face reality and be honest with my Self.
I still ate seafood, and rarely, if I "had to," chicken. However, the seafood was not really that appealing, so when Zorra/Father God told us to eliminate meat, seafood and the yolk of the egg, it was fine with me.
I still use dairy ... organic whole milk (never use over-processed "low fat" or "no fat" -- just another ploy to make people sick), cheese, yogurt, butter, etc., all okay.
On the Okay List:
Whole Organic Milk. - I suddenly remembered Ovaltine, which all the other kids drank while I grew up on black coffee, with my German Mom. ;-) Actually that was better, as now they know that drinking a lot of milk actually depletes our calcium reserves.
Cheese - Sauce on brocolli and other vegetables, or in soup, on homemade pizza, with "apples and cheese," with egg whites (buy them in a carton) to make omelettes
Homemade Pizza - 2 halves of whole grain English Muffin, tomato slice spiced with garlic, Himalayan Sea Salt, oregano, basil - braise tomatoe, then top with slice of fresh mozzarella cheese topped with chopped grreen pepper and what ever...
Eggplant Parmesan - Braise oiled egglant slices - add favorite sauce and mozzarella chees slice - repeat eggplant, sauce, chees - finish with browned bread crumbs!
Yogurt Fruit Salad with pieces of grapefruit, orange, sweetened shredded coconut, organic walnuts, organic blackberries, organic raspberries. Make it ahead and it is good to snack on. It keeps.
Heuvos Ranchero - Fluffy egg white atop corn tortillas, refried beans, shredded cheese, enchilada sauce, garnished with chopped green onions and chopped fresh tomato
Potato - Soup, pancakes, fried with onions, hash browns, mashed ahead of time and as side dish with ... say, veggie burger with grilled onions.
Baked Potato with sour cream, butter, cheese sauce and brocolli, etc.
Baked Sweet Potato - Yam
Then there is Chinese Stir Fry ... add cashews ...
Fresh Sprouts - To garnish Chinese, sandwiches, salads ...
Bean Soup is yummy and good for leftovers. Add cornbread.
All kinds of nuts ... especially organic walnuts, almonds and almond butter!
Oh, have you tried the FRESH Spaghetti Sauce in the refrigerated section:... usually by the cheeses? Also Alfredo and Pesto sauce? Remember, canned tomatoes are a no-no! They react with the can.
So, you have all kinds of fresh pastas and fresh sauces. Get creative! Tastes as good as Olive Garden!
Zorra told us we really don't need that much protein, now that we have adult bodies...
And I LOVE Bittersweet Chocolate! At Trader Joe's you can get a huge One-pound+ bar for $5! Yes, Belgium chocolate, just for Trade Joe!

Its a good thing im a vegetarian now, been so for 4 months now!
I feel a lot less angry and have greater patience.
My belief is when you eat meat you are eating the fear of that animal before it has died, also animals are meant to be our companions and to learn from them.
Also to mention the way the animal is treated during its life and before death.
If this info is helpful to someone then I have done my part!
Namaste:)
I went vegetarian a few months ago after making an attempt to survive off of long-term-storage foods. I wanted to see what it would be like if the SHTF and I had to survive off stuff like that. It was a pretty bad move on my part. I felt sick most of the time...
But, I have a friend that went through the gastric bypass surgery, and she HAD to change her diet DRASTICALLY!!! Her problem is that she has a very sensitive gag reflex, so she cannot stomach very many things at all.
So I started investigating high protein, high nutrient meal replacement drinks. Here is what I discovered:
RAW Meal is probably THE BEST vegan meal replacement. It's not cheap(APPROX, $40 for a 2.6lb container), and for at least one of the flavors I have to plug my nose just to get past the taste and get it down.... but if you want to talk healthy, this is THE ONE!!!
Next would be Bio-TRUST Low-Carb Time-Released Protein Blend. They only have chocolate and vanilla, and it's not vegan and does contain milk products. BUT, it's hormone-free, and sourced from cows not treated with the potentially dangerous hormones rBGH or rBST. After using this product, I noticed that I was increasing my muscle mass without exercising or doing anything different from my normal routine. The ONLY problems with this product is that it has to be ordered (which can take quite a while...for them to even process the order takes 5 days) and for 3 1.2lb containers cost about $100 after shipping. Is it worth it? YES!!!!!! Research it and find out!
The next one that I use regularly is called SPIRU-TEIN. This is without a doubt the best tasting High Protein Energy Meal that I've tried, and I've tried almost all of them. It's Non-GMO and vegetarian, and has 100% daily value of all vitamins and has a broad profile of essential minerals. This product has more flavors than I've seen in a meal replacement drink, which is important. If you only use ONE type of these meal replacement drinks, it gets old very fast, and then you'll find that you want something else. So it's best to have several of these on hand so you can switch between them and not get bored from just one kind. My favorite flavor is the Cherries Jubilee, but I still haven't tried most of their other flavors.... like peaches and cream, cappuccino, raspberry royal, chocolate cherry, blueberry.... the list goes on and on.
The other one that I add to ALL of my meal replacement drinks is called Brown Rice Protein Powder. This is some really great stuff. For $15 you get a 1.5lb container that provides ALL the essential amino acids. By itself, it's not that bad. Tastes kinda like drinking a loaf of bread. But if you add a scoop to your other drinks, you cannot taste it, while getting all the benefits.
I hope that this helps someone out there interested in finding protein from sources other than meat. God Bless!!!
I REALLY hope I am not overwhelming you by saying this.
First of all, cutting meat out of your diet certainly has an enormous benefit, by reducing personal impact on human starvation, pollution, horrific animal suffering, and reducing your risk of developing many diseases.
I have to say this because I believe everyone who genuinely want to reduce animal suffering would want to know.
Dairy in its production, and this includes small family farms, is arguable even more cruel, and certainly just as cruel as meat production, and always requires the killing of animals, including male baby animals.
In order to produce dairy products, mother cows are brutally sexually inseminated (literally raped in a section of the dairy production that is literally referred to by most dairy producers as the “rape rack”), most often by a large thick metal rod, and sometimes by a workers arm.
When her baby is born it is taken away(often dragged by the back legs) on factory farms, on average, no longer than a day after birth, and in the rare “more humane” small farms, a few days after birth, and (on factory farms) kept in a dark restraining "veal crate" approximately the same size as it's body. It is also chained. In the rare smaller farms, it is kept chained in a small box or cage, and is still killed, as it is not financially possible to produce dairy for a living and keep the male babies alive.
In all honesty, it takes the repeated sexual abuse of sentient female animals, followed by the repeated seizing of their newborn children in order to produce dairy. It also requires the killing of the female cows at an age far younger than their natural lifespan for low grade beef. ( On factory farms approximately 5 years, and on non- factory farms slightly more). All commercially available dairy in grocery stores comes from factory farms. Non factory farms are practically nonexistent and still require repeated sexual abuse, killing of baby animals, and killing of mothers at a young age.
For more evidence of this, you might be interested in the documentary Earthlings, or to look into Farm Sanctuary's website, and the info there. It is a brutally cruel industry. For every dairy product that is bought, this process is directly empowered. If you visit the website http://www.godairyfree.org/ it will give you a list of all the potential labellings for dairy on ingredient labels, and more info.
In addition, and again PLEASE do not let me overwhelm you, egg production, which is almost entirely done at the Factory Farm level, also requires killing animals, and enormous suffering. Male chicks are killed in a manner that is so horrific I hesitate to mention it here. All eggs available in grocery stores, including those with misleading labels such as certified humane, or cage free (which are legally able to be used if a certain amount of money is paid by the company and are no reliable guarantee of humane treatment whatsoever) come from factory farms that involve horrific cruelty, and the killing of animals, including baby animals. Even the rare occasion when Factory Farming is not used to produce eggs; a profit simply cannot be made by failing do away with the great majority of male baby chickens. Egg production at the Factory Farm level, is also arguably even more cruel and requires even more death than production of chicken meat.
Please visit the following links for more info about this.
http://gentleworld.org/to-be-a-feminist-is-to-be-a-vegan/
http://www.woodstocksanctuary.org/learn-3/factory-farmed-animals/co...
Also, another reason why producing eggs cannot be done humanely, even at the non factory farm level, is the vast majority of backyard chickens originate from the same breeding industry that provides chicks to large-scale farming operations. As a result, virtually all backyard chickens come from industrial hatcheries that employ the same brutal measures that are standard among factory farms (including debeaking) even though the prospective buyer is encouraged to believe otherwise through careful packaging of the “product.” For more info about this, check out the following article. http://gentleworld.org/whats-wrong-with-backyard-eggs/
And for more info about why there is truly no such thing as humane production of animal products, and these labels are no guarantee of humane treatment:
http://gentleworld.org/cage-free-not-free-enough/
Again, PLEASE do not let me overwhelm you because it is certainly true that a vegetarian diet, even with dairy and eggs is far more beneficial for the planet, animals, and personal health than a non vegetarian diet. I just feel it is infinitely important, especially in this community of spiritual people who are so interested in our planetary and personal ascension, of peace and love for others to at least be given the information that these industries, including dairy and eggs, are requiring enormous suffering and death.
That is wonderful that you are interested in vegetarian diets!
I have been vegan for many years, and studied nutrition on my own for many years as well. I can tell with absolute certainty you do not need to worry about protein or fat deficiencies if you eat a plant based diet.
The human body is identical to other Frugivores in everything from stomach acidity, to gestation period. (If you see the chart I am posting at the bottom of this comment, you will see how clearly we align with other Frugivores.) Humans thrive on plant based foods. Yes, we have evolved to eat animal based foods historically when plant foods were not available. Yet the science is now clear, we do best on plant based food. The human body produces protein easily and most ideally from the full spectrum of amino acids found in ALL whole plant based foods, especially raw plant foods. No protein supplements or additional fat are necessary, ever, in a person who is not starving. To convert a foreign(animal) source of protein into usable protein for the human body, we must break the meat, dairy, or eggs we eat down into a full spectrum of animo acids first, and only then can we attempt to reform this foreign(meat-including fish and chicken, dairy, and eggs) food source back into a full spectrum of usable amino acids for the human body. Animal products unfortunately putrify in our bodies before we can do this, or extract any other real, worthwhile nutrition from it. In regards to getting enough fat, there is also plenty of fat in the essential fatty acids naturally occurring in fruit, veggies, potatoes and other whole plant based foods.
Millions of people in rural China, took part in The China Study, the largest, most conclusive nutritional study ever conducted on man, over the course of many years. These individuals ate a high carb, low fat, plant based diet, in comparison to the American population whose diet consisted of 70% animal products on average. In the U S, obesity was rampant, as was heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. In China, these diseases were nearly nonexistent, and the population was not overweight at all. There was no protein or fat deficiencies in these rural Chinese people, who ate mainly rice as a staple.
The idea that we need animal products for protein is literally nothing more than an attempt by the animal agri business and the pharmaceutical industries to perpetrate nutritional myths that will keep is sick, and continuing to buy their products. Feather Winger's chart is entirely accurate, there is far more protein, that is of a far higher quality in raw veggies, than in any animal products.
Again, every cell in the human body runs on glycogen, so if you are going to be concerned about anything, getting enough carbs is it. The healthiest diet, by FAR for all humans, is a high carb, low fat, overt fat free (no oil) vegan diet. I would definitely recommend to everyone the advice put out by Dr. Doug Graham (a really good raw vegan doctor), which is to eat 5 grams of carbs per pound of current body weight, and 10 grams of carbs per kg of current body weight. This means carbs from low fat, overt fat free starch based whole plant foods. This is the guideline followed by those who eat an 80 10 10 raw vegan diet, but the same principle applies to cooked vegan foods that are overt fat (oil)-free, and low fat. Basically the best sources of carbs are in order from most preferable to less preferable; fruit, sweet potatoes, regular potatoes, grains-especially gluten free, and legumes. On average, that is 2500-3000 calories for women, and 3500-4000 calories for men from starch based foods. This may sound like a lot, but is it extremely important, and extremely healthy. Whole plant based foods are less caloric dense than animal products, do not cause health problems, and with the exception of Nuts and Avocadoes do not cause weight gain, so you do not need to limit yourself. Eat until you are full! If you find yourself feeling hungrier than normal after cutting out meat and other animal products, increase your carbs! Carbs are the ideal fuel for the human body, and it is essential that you get enough. Also, if I can stress as much as possible, all healthy carbohydrates from whole plant foods, contain plenty of protein and fat, and the healthiest form of protein and fat. The best way to get protein is to make sure you are eating enough whole plant foods. Raw veggies are loaded with protein, yes, but also very low in carbs, so again make sure you eat other foods that are high in carbs as well.
Low carb diets are very dangerous, and another nutritional myth that has been put out to the population in an attempt to create more profit for the animal agri business (animal products do not contain carbs, and low carb diets generally require increasing rather significantly the amount of animal products you eat.)
If you are still craving animal products, or feeling hungry when you are transitioning off meat and dairy and eating enough carbs as I mentioned before, try eating more legumes during your transition period. Beans are extremely filling. Meat, dairy and eggs are extremely caloric dense, so you need to be aware that you need to eat more food as a vegan in order to get enough calories to make up for the smaller, more filling portion sizes you may be used to. Legumes are more caloric dense than other vegan foods, so they will help with these cravings. Meat and especially dairy are very addictive both mentally and physically, so keep that in mind. It is not a natural craving, it is your body responding to certain harmful things in the meat and dairy that makes you crave them. Caseomorphins in dairy for example, are enormously addictive. People do not crave these foods because they are healthy! Also, your brain gets used to the style of eating that involves smaller very dense portions, so there can be a mental addiction to this certain way of eating. Again, it is far healthier and more humane in so many ways, that it is certainly worth eating a bit more. Also, if you eat an overt fat free vegan diet, low fat vegan diet you literally do not and should not worry about limiting your portion sizes at all.
I would recommend as much as possible, for anyone who is looking for the best advice about vegetarian and vegan diets, to look to Dr McDougall's website, http://www.drmcdougall.com/, or better yet try a raw, 80 10 10 high carb. diet. You will find more info about this at www.foodandsport.com and www.30bananasaday.com
Also, in regards to plant based oil. (Please don't let me overwhelm you, oil is far healthier than animal products and is not an unethical food with the exception of palm oil which is very harmful to the planet.) However, in terms of the health effects, oil is processed food, and very unhealthy. This is not understood by many people, and may seem extreme, but it is literally a great contributer to heart disease. It coats every cell in the body, making it more difficult to extract quality nutrition from everything else you eat, and greatly slows the entire digestive process. I would suggest reading Caldwell Esselstyn's book on Preventing and Reversing Heart Disease. Again, there is plenty of healthy fat in whole plant based foods, and all that you need to thrive. Even without eating high fat foods like nuts and avocadoes.
Also, I would not suggest using nutritional yeast as it contains excitotoxins which are less harmful than MSG, but damage brain cells nonetheless. This is also not understood by many vegans, including certain doctors. I am just telling you what I have learned personally from reading Dr Doug Graham’s book. Again, please don't let me overwhelm you with this because it is true that nutritional yeast is far, far less harmful than dairy or meat. And a eating a bit of nutri. yeast every once in a while is not going to cause any serious health problems. It is just good to be aware it is not the healthiest thing.
One of the most common defenses of meat-eating that vegans encounter is, “If I wasn’t meant to eat meat, then I wouldn’t have these canine teeth!” It’s a comment that’s often tossed out after a meat-eater has been confronted with information about animal farming cruelty, or with the fact that humans have no biological need for meat, milk or eggs. But there are several serious problems with the “canine teeth” argument, the most glaring one being the premise that “the presence of canine teeth = meant to eat meat.” In truth, with the exception of rodents, rabbits, and pikas, nearly all mammals have canine teeth. In fact, several herbivores have ferocious canine teeth, and, as you’ll see in the gallery below, the largest canine teeth of any land animal belong to a true herbivore.
Another problem with the “canine teeth” argument is the idea that, just because we have a physical attribute that enables us to do something harmful, we are morally entitled to perform that activity whenever we want. Humans are physically capable of inflicting all kinds of violence, but our capacity to harm others has nothing to do with whether or not we are right to harm others. Indeed, most people would say it is wrong to cause harm when you can just as easily avoid doing so. And we can drastically reduce the harm and death we cause other animals simply by making different choices at the grocery store.
Check out the photo gallery below for more reasons why our canine teeth don’t make us meat-eaters, and for surprising images of some stunningly fang-tastic herbivores.
Say hello to my little friend: the saber-toothed deer. You read that right. It’s not photo shop, it’s just a tiny deer with giant fangs. Musk deer, as they're officially known, are herbivores who live in the forested mountains of Southern Asia. They’re around 2 feet tall, weigh between 15 and 37 pounds, and the males’ elongated canine teeth form saber-like tusks which they use in territorial disputes, or when competing for mates. So what kind of food do musk deer tear into with those vicious canines? The menu is a virtual gore-fest: leaves, flowers, grasses, mosses and lichens.

Sorry, I meant to say 5 grams of carbs per pound of current body weight, and 10 grams of carbs per kg of current body weight per day.
Cannabis Sativa is reportedly from Sirius (AND THE ONLY THING RELATED TO IT PER DNA ANALYSIS IS (barely) THE STRAWBERRY). But then we in the U.S.A. are required to use only the drugs prescribed by our boss or supervisor, so maybe vegetables with healing properties do come from places not of this Earth.
