'Paranormal' Vs 'Normal'

The dictionaries define the word paranormal as:"occurrence of an event or perception without a scientific explanation"another dictionary gives its own version that is hard to reconcile with the former:"denoting events or phenomena such as telekinesis that are beyond the scope of normal scientific understanding"On one hand, I don't like such distinction as who should realy say what is 'normal' or 'ubnormal' in the universe.Explanation on the other hand is defined as:"Making an idea clear or understandable"You may see that such definitions are problematic. For instance, scientists openly say that we donnot yet understand gravity, blackholes, dark matter etc. However, they will never admit that these are 'paranormal' occurences yet it fit the definition squarely. Why for instance can't I point to dark matter to James Randy as a proof of paranormal and get the token? Of course he will say I cannot use ignorance to prove anything. This is true and it stems from the dysfunctioning definition we term 'paranormal'. 'Randy' can always have his 'Jesus is comming' soon hope! Just waite for a scientific explanation while we dare you to prove that there are things that are not yet explicable by science.What is scientific understanding in the first place? It seems to be just getting farmiliar with an event. It is getting into an habbit of using the idea. This is why there is alot of interlectual inertia amongst scientists. If we were to observe levitation, for instance, the scientist would simply invent some fancy term such as 'dark matter' etc. When you invork such an abrakadabra, it creats a huge illusion of understanding. If you were to levitate for Randi, he will say ah! That is dark matter, dark energy etc. The point is it realy matter less that we understand phenomena. It is just a play of words.Since science progress, is science a process of turning 'paranormal' things to 'normal'? I guess they will also deny this and accuse those who try to make 'paranormal' 'normal' for encaging in pseudoscience, crackpottery etc.So the problem seems to stem from this definition, 'paranormal'. We need a concept that says what it is rifering to and not what it is not rifering to (such as not scientific explanable). We can for instance define the word 'magic' as the act in which a mind influence matter etc.

    Good to learn of Mandelbrot set.:) it is incredibly beautifull. I guess the math is not so far from those of Riemann surfaces.

    Yes we only amuse ourselves that we understand some things but when we close exermine them, we find that they are mysteries. We can go everywhere in phyc book where 'dark matter' occur and subtitute it with 'hand of God' and it serve the same purpose!

    Good observation here...  Perhaps we should call it ´´things we think we understand´´ and ´´things we admit we don´t understand.´´

    .. of course ´´things´´ is the wrong word, too......it is difficult to communicate with language ...and difficult to communicate without it...
