I don't even think that is the correct question to ask at all. Is memory even stored at all? This vocabulary, which mixes the language of machines and that of brains has brought confusion when it comes to understanding both brains and computers. They begine by identifying the word, 'memory', a term we assing to a leaving matter, with a conceptually dead machine and then they now apply the term 'store', a term we assign to conceptually dead objects, to the leaving brain in claiming that memory is stored in the brain. So the poor guys picture a tank in the brain wherein 'memory' is stored. Needless to say, no such a tank has ever been found in the brain! Fact is, even if a brain is damaged in several areas, an animal still remembers everything! So let me give u what I understand as 'memory'. It is defined as the EXPERIENCE of past events at a present moment. 'Experience' in turn means to come to one's awareness. It is a term that has no meaning in the context of conceptually dead things. If you think that a rock is dead, what might it mean to say that it is experiencing something? So a computer cannot remember anything unless you are insinuating that it is AWARE.Why do we remember? My answere is simple: because it happened. It is the same question as why do I see my guitar? Because it exists in front of me. Why do I remember the game played two days ago? Because the game exists in my time axis just as the guitar exists in the space axis. If you are willing to accept, memory is the past itself!!So the memory is stored in ME and not in anything that is MINE in any way. If a certain song is played and 'I' hear it, 'I' changes from being something that has never heard the song into something that has ever heard the song. So there is no tank in the brain. In case an unfamiliar tune is played it doesn't come to me as memory simply because 'ME' is not an entity that has ever heard that song. 'ME' is an entity that has never heard that song but is hearing it now. Henceforth, 'ME' turns into an entity that has once heard the song. ME is a time variable entity. It vary so FUNDAMENTALY, meaning how it does so can't be figured out in terms of lesser understandable concepts.
