The symbol of the cross - means the four cardinal points. Circle - the global world sphere, in other words, the planetary sphere. Circle, inscribed in the cross is a symbol indicating the direction on the compass on the planetary sphere surface.
These crosses are often found at the forks of roads and at higher elevations, they are also called "worship cross." The name comes from the days when the compass was not known. These crosses, established under sides of the world, it was help to determine the direction of motion.
Here on this "cross" Jesus was crucified, it was originally just a figure of speech, but thanks to the work of Christian the fabulist turned into a "bloody history of execution." :))
This expression is "crucified on cross" meant in those days, just "he is somewhere on the earth."
