The American public is less likely to believe in global warming than it was just five years ago. Yet, paradoxically, scientists are more confident than ever that climate change is real and caused largely by human activities. Something a bit strange is happening with public opinion and climate change.  Anthony Leiserowitz, who directs the Yale University Project on Climate Change Communication, delved into this in a recent poll. He not only asked citizens what they thought of climate change, he also asked them to estimate how climate scientists feel about global warming.

"Only 13 percent of Americans got the correct answer, which is that in fact about 97 percent of American scientists say that climate change is happening, and about a third of Americans just simply say they don't know," he said.

Most Americans are unaware that the National Academy of Sciences, known for its cautious and even-handed reviews of the state of science, is firmly on board with climate change. It has been for years.

Ralph Cicerone, president of the National Academy, paraphrased its most recent report on the subject.

"The consensus statement is that climate changes are being observed, are certainly real, they seem to be increasing, and that humans are mostly likely the cause of all or most of these changes," he said.

That's not just the view of the U.S. National Academies. There's also a consensus statement from the presidents of science academies from around the world, including the academies of China, the United Kingdom, India, Japan, Russia, France, Brazil, the list goes on.

Cicerone also points to strong statements about climate change from the leading professional organizations in the United States, including from the American Chemical Society, the American Physical Society and others.

Of course, it's still possible to find a few scientists who reject the consensus. Cicerone says it is appealing to think they are right when they say there's no need to worry about complicated cap-and-trade policies or otherwise fuss about climate change.

"I think rooting for the underdog, the David against the Goliath, is something that we all do — I think it's particularly American, although it happens everywhere," he said. "And in fact, this is the way scientists work.

"Scientists don't gain respect, and attention, and fame, if you will, by going along with the mainstream, and I don't know of many scientists who try to go along with the mainstream — they're trying to go the opposite direction."

Though a few are still finding reasons for doubt, Cicerone says he and most of his colleagues find the science of climate change is stronger the harder they look. So does this public disbelief mean that Americans are becoming more anti-science?

Leiserowitz of Yale University says that's not what his polls show.

"Most Americans have overwhelming trust in the science and trust in scientists," he said.

But the public is largely unaware of the consensus because that's not what they're hearing on cable TV or reading in blogs.

"They mostly get exposed to a much more conflicted view, and that's of course not by accident," he said.

Leiserowitz is now starting to ask how public opinion changes when people actually know that the National Academy of Sciences and other groups consider climate change to be a big concern.

"So far the evidence shows that the more people understand that there is this consensus, the more they tend to believe that climate change is happening, the more they understand that humans are a major contributor, and the more worried they are about it," Leiserowitz said.

He says if you drill down a bit, the American public actually is not split when you ask them if they'd like to see a gradual transition from fossil fuels to clean energy.

"We find overwhelming bipartisan agreement about that," he said.

As it happens, that transition is a step toward slowing the pace of global climate change.

  • Sometimes I wonder if deniers are just afraid of the possibility that while they are contributing to the destruction of the planet, as we all are to some degree, they are destroying themselves as well.  Others are clearly bought by oil and coal companies, so it's not a surprise they would deny.  And a few even say that environmentalism is radical or that some treat it as a religion.  I just don't see how this can be.  I get that some a passionate about the planet, but a religion?  Perhaps this is so with a very small minority.  And if it's radical, then it's the radical concept of simply cleaning up after oneself.  Clean the air, clean the water, clean the soil.  What's the problem with this?  If a person has a problem with this, then I bet their house is an absolute mess! lol
  • There are clima changes on on other planets in our solar system too, and i cannot se that there are acticityes from humans there..lol. Clima changes is a infinite plan. We enter closer and closer to the thickest part of foton-band., Fotons are extremly high-frequenzy enery, and the band heatened up the planets Inner and outer world. Glaciere on North-pole is melting since the oceon is heatened up. The inner Earth are heatened up to. That creates higer pressure and we se more vulcanoes awakening. On a global level temperature has arise a little, not so much, since Earth tries to adjust all this.

Pole-shift has started, so all this is a cyclic Divine plan for our Galaxy.. Taxes for this is a fraud, and are ment be income for the NWO-.Cabal. Clima will not change of taxes. They use taxes as a excuse, and to put guilt uppon Humanity.Fy .Fy.

  • I totally and completely believe we are having some severe climate change, but do not, nor will I believe that "global Warming" is a (high percentage) man made.  ALL the planets are warming and changing, not just the earth and it's not because of 5 billion people, Hummers or a lack of solar power (or other "green" power) on the other planets. The entire solar system is warming. The whole "Global Warming" or "Climate Change" (business) is about making money.  Or TAKING money, from us, to THEM.  Carbon taxes?  Paid by the businesses or Corp's that don't even pay taxes?  I just read today that the UN wants MANY TRILLIONS of dollars FOR Climate change...  What "they" plan to do with the money wasn't stated.  In a few months it won't matter as much as Gaia is going to fix a BUNCH of it herself.  The FOL, GFOL etc., are supposed to be here "soon", the Mayan calendar ends OCTOBER 28th THIS year, etc.  Let's see what happens before Dec 2012 and take it from there.  Fewer can afford to drive anywhere these days so that's gotta make a huge difference if you believe all the stories.  We DO NEED to take care of our planet, NOW, but stop listening to the scare and fear mongers and check all the other sources of information too...
  • This American believes in Global Warming...

I think we would be foolish to think that humans multiplying and multiplying doesn't have some kind of profound effect on Climate or the Earth.  Most people who believe in climate change, are also Climate and Enviornmentally "aware".

We understand that it's up to us to take responsibility for this Earth, the Water, the Sky, and keeping it clean, as well as our own bodies.

It seems there are people who don't care about Enviornmentalism, and others that do.  Personally I cherish clean water, clean skies, etc...

We have already damaged this wonderful treasure, Planet Earth.  But it's NEVER too late to turn around our views, and FIX THINGS FOR THE BETTER!

Our awakening is opening us up to a deeper kind of awareness.... We become aware of our surroundings, each other, our health, and our planet's health.

I am thankful there are scientists out there, who can put down solid evidence for Global Awareness.  Once day Science and Spirituality will merge into one amazing thing.

    A higher consciousness..... :)
