Click https://youtu.be/M71AMzXtt4c for the live 1970 Berkeley version of this song; I personally feel it is better than his 1971 studio version at https://youtu.be/xAj5gtSJcuM.

  • Hi Malcolm!  I often play this song and while I prefer the studio version, especially when he asks "is the microphone on?" They each have their own vibes going on.  Voodoo child is also a favourite that I play at gigs when the crowd can handle it!  LOL but getting back to the song, I found the studio version easier to learn.  Cheers!

    • Thank you Ivor Carter! The studio version simply has a lot of complex breaks; I like the live version for the sake of simplicity (I guess I aint that good). Anyway, for all the serious Hendrix heads out there, here is the live Maui version of this song (I wasn't allowed in the movie theater to watch this version with my older sister due to "adult content," and this was because of my appearance (I was 11 years old at the time, and I looked like I was 8 years old at the time. Check out my Ashtar photo; I was 54 years old when it was posted on Ashtar)) Click https://youtu.be/vT9oUI2kYXg for video.

      Cheers!!!

      • Hi - So how long have you been playing?  Some songs like voodoo child are easier than one might think. I'm nearly 60 and have been playing since I was 16 but there are many kids who are much better than me. Either way, I enjoy it. One secret I have found is this -  If you become one with your instrument it just flows after that!

When I play - I know that when I "start tripping" as I call it,  I very nearly fall over - and I am actually channeling!  I see you are from Austin, I have a neice there, pretty wild girl! Cheers!

        • I've been playing for 20+ years. I have two licenses from Experience Hendrix, one for "Manic Depression" and the other for "Voodoo Child (slight return)." I've done both on two private CDs that were giveaways to friends and relatives; I also know how to do "Purple Haze" and "Foxey Lady."

This song is different in the sense that it doesn't feature Jimi's pentatonic blues scale approach (which was so prominent with "Are You Experienced?"). This song appears to reflect Jimi's experiences with hearing north African acoustic guitar during travels to Morocco, where the guitar was invented, And yes, it sounds fantastic with a flanger.

I find it refreshing to listen to music with upbeat messages, as opposed to this "being a criminal is cool" c(rap). It is no wonder that the U.S. has some of the dumbest people on the planet; look at the music and icons it embraces. Next we'll hear that El Chapo will be given a lifetime achievement award for threatening Donald Trump.

It sounds bizarre but I suppose Nostradamus had to make sense of the 20th century somehow."
