The Society of Saint Pius X has been prohibited from celebrating Mass, administering sacraments, or holding public prayers at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, while groups that reject fundamental Catholic doctrines concerning Our Lady and Christ are permitted. Frank Wright examines the dispute as another example of what he sees as increasingly severe punishment directed toward Catholics attempting to preserve traditional faith and worship.
The Lourdes controversy follows Jesuit Father Thomas Reese’s recent article declaring his hatred for the Traditional Latin Mass. Reese supports homosexual clergy, married priests, and women deacons. Wright argues that hostility toward the Latin Mass reflects a much deeper theological conflict between traditional Catholicism and what he describes as a liberal, humanist “synodal” religion.
Wright connects the controversy to the SSPX’s pilgrimage, Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre’s defense of tradition, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò’s warnings, and Pope St. Pius X’s condemnation of modernism. The current crisis is not simply a dispute over liturgical preferences — it is a struggle between fundamentally incompatible conceptions of the Catholic faith.
