"For I spake not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the days that I brought them out of the land of Egypt (1), concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices (2) : But this thing commanded I them, saying follow my voice(3) and I will be your Father, and ye shall be my Children : and walk ye in all the ways that I have inspired you, that it may be well unto you.
But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear, but walked in the counsels and in the imagination of fear and doubt, and went backward and not forward". Jeremiah

(1) Symbol of the evolution from blind belief in the illusion of matter to spiritual awakening.
(2) Guilt and self punishment, wrong conception of sin.
(3) Inspiration
