The Sixth Trumpet — The Army of Judgment
The fifth trumpet had already unleashed the terrifying locust army upon the earth.
But John’s vision was not over.
Another angel appeared.
The sixth angel raised his trumpet and sounded it.
A voice came from the four horns of the golden altar standing before God.
“Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.”
And the four angels were released.
These were mysterious beings who had been held at the Euphrates, waiting for the precise moment appointed for them. John says they had been prepared for a specific hour, day, month, and year.
Now their time had come.
And what followed was unlike anything John had ever seen.
An enormous army appeared.
John heard its number:
Two hundred million.
The army was mounted on terrifying creatures resembling horses, but these were no ordinary horses.
Their heads looked like the heads of lions.
Fire came from their mouths.
Smoke followed.
And sulfur, or brimstone, poured forth with the fire and smoke.
Together, these three plagues killed one-third of humanity.
The creatures were also dangerous from behind. Their tails resembled serpents, and the heads on those tails could inflict further harm.
The world was being consumed by a supernatural catastrophe.
Yet John noticed something even more disturbing.
The people who survived these plagues did not repent.
They continued worshiping demons and idols made from gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood—things that could neither see, hear, nor walk.
They continued their murders, sorceries, sexual immorality, and thefts.
Even after witnessing destruction on an unimaginable scale, they refused to turn away from their sins.
Then the vision changed.
Before the seventh trumpet could sound, John saw another mighty angel descending from heaven.
The angel held a small scroll.
John was told to take it and eat it.
It tasted sweet in his mouth, but became bitter in his stomach.
The angel told him that he must continue prophesying about peoples, nations, languages, and kings.
Then John was shown two mysterious witnesses.
For a period of 1,260 days, they would prophesy, clothed in mourning.
They possessed extraordinary powers.
Fire could come from their mouths against their enemies. They could shut the sky so that no rain would fall, turn waters into blood, and strike the earth with plagues.
But eventually, a beast from the bottomless pit would make war against them.
The beast would kill them.
Their bodies would lie exposed in the great city, and people throughout the world would celebrate their deaths.
But after three and a half days, something astonishing would happen.
The breath of life from God would enter them.
They would stand upon their feet.
Fear would seize those watching.
Then a voice from heaven would call them upward.
And they would ascend into heaven in a cloud.
Finally, the seventh angel raised his trumpet.
And when it sounded, loud voices in heaven proclaimed that the kingdom of the world had become the kingdom of God and His Christ.
The twenty-four elders fell upon their faces and worshiped God.
The final trumpet had sounded.
But the vision was not finished.
The judgments were only revealing the beginning of the final confrontation between heaven, earth, and the powers of evil.
