Well, I never really listened to Stryper, but I will check it out. To be honest, I'm not really a huge fan of heavy metal music. There are a few bands that are good, but by and large, most heavy bands are too heavy for me, particularly the satanic based ones like Slayer or Anthrax. Other bands, like Megadeth or Judas Priest, aren't heavy enough. Metallica, to me, has the best degree of heaviness, power, and intensity, without going over the top and becoming "dark" music, which I don't like.
And, I mean, Metallica is without a doubt the most successful and popular heavy metal band in the world. They have been all over the world, and even after 30 years, continue to sell out every seat in the house, in every arena they play in, where ever in the world they go. People from all walks of life, and all different generations living, love Metallica. They've won Grammys and did a great job of taking metal music to the mainstream, bringing it to much wider audiences than when they were simply an underground sensation. People chide them for going mainstream, I give them credit for it for making metal music more popular and paving the way for the success of other metal bands that followed.
But the thing with Metallica is, they didn't just choose to be heavy metal heads and that's it. Paired with their heavy metal prowess were deep, heart felt songs, branching out into all kinds of different genres, from country to operatic. While some die hard metalists might chide them for that, I give them credit for it! It gave them a depth that no other heavy metal band came close to. So that's why I respect them so much, and I mean, I don't like every Metallica song, but the ones that are good, are truly legendary!
