⚛️ Why Zeolites Are Negatively Charged
• Their structure is built from SiO₄ and AlO₄ tetrahedra.
• When aluminum (Al³⁺) replaces silicon (Si⁴⁺) in the framework, it introduces a negative charge because Al³⁺ contributes one less positive charge than Si⁴⁺.
• This negative charge is balanced by cations (like Na⁺, K⁺, Ca²⁺) that reside in the pores and channels of the zeolite.
🔄 Ion Exchange
• These balancing cations are not part of the rigid framework and can be exchanged with other cations in solution.
• That’s why zeolites are used in water softening (exchanging Na⁺ for Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺) and pollution control (removing heavy metals).
