As our solar system travels throughout the galaxy it periodically passes through areas with higher amounts of energy(cosmic radiation/charged particles etc.). It could very well be that when we are passing through the areas with greater amounts of energy we function at a higher level, and when our solar system begins to pass through an area of space with less energy many of our higher senses becomes somewhat dormant. These transitions take thousands of years and could be the reason why humanity was able to accomplish many things in the past that we can't reproduce in our current age(we lost something). In our present time we are told that these senses do not exist and we are trained from a very young age to ignore them instead of trying to develop them.
