Actually there are some basics on the term dimension.
A dimension is a manyfold of happenings which can be determined being the content of that dimension.
Now the law of contents of a dimension is this - it is impossible having one content having the very same coordinates like another content. A can not be at the place of B at the same time.
Different is the case with a dimension as a whole. It can be, that something is part of different dimensions. In general we have
each (n-1)dimension can be part of the nDimension. So a plain 2dimension is part of a 3dimensional room.
That means, that at the same time dimensions can interfere, while contents of one dimension at the same time can`t.
This is the reason of the flatlander example. A flatlander (2dimensional) can be observed by humans (3dimensional) without being able to know it (flatlanders lack the 3. dimension). So why should it be impossible assuming, that higher dimensions than 3 can interfer immediately and at the same time in human 3dimesional space?
An interesting play in diemsional manner is the Möbius strip and Klein`s bottle (you may google for it, if you want, it`s pretty interesting).
Now over the last years there appeared via channellings or wherelse a speaking about 4, 5, 6 or 7 dimensions. People want to exceed their 3dimensional entrapment looking to transcend into 4, 5, 6 or whatever dimensional being.
According my understanding it is like telling a bee (2dimensional) to exceed into human 3dimensionality - this makes no sense. It might be only for mathematical interest determining numbers of dimensions - in spiritual regard it is totally senseless.
For we as humans can`t imagine higher dimensions than 3. The climax is an understanding, that at one point at one time there might be a couple of different dimensions happening. Such understanding is not difficult.
Every book I read (actually T. C. Boyle) serves as an entrance to another reality or dimension. Every thought apart the awareness of now is hanging in other realities or dimensions. And every look into the world is actually different from other human`s looks, perceptions and awarenesses.
Thus I am entrapped in my different worlds, and I am not. I am both entrapped and free. I am both temporal and eternal. I am both lonesome and part of all that is and could be.
I am a living paradox.
And naming the numbers of dimensions makes no sense for me. Speaking of higher dimensions is fairly enough. This should be allowed to a conscious and paradoxical creature...

The problem with it is that our language isn't built to handle this sort of concept. There are many different "types" of dimensions and they All mean something different.

1) Dimensions as levels of an individual physical universe only. Everything in these "dimensions" consists of solid matter and energy and operates under various laws of physics, but because these dimensions are mainly unaffected by others that are not directly connected to them it creates scenarios where things can pass through each other.
In terms of Dimensions this kind consists of things like Length, Width, Height, Spin, and so on. For example the Tube-Taurus represented by the Flower Of Life is a 5th Dimensional object - it has length, width, and height, but it also has 2 forms of Spinning action going on as well.
There are a number of Extraterrestrial races that live out their entire lives in these other Dimensions of the physical world, that don't readily interact with ours.
There are 12 of these Dimensions, and none of them are really better than any others, it is like they are side by side.
2) Dimensions as levels of Spiritual Being, meaning the Quality of the universe, and amount of Light that either an Individual is embodying or the Universe/World around them is.
This is described primarily by my explaination as Dimensionality being based on Chakras.
For example a 5D person or a 5D reality meaning that Compassion and Integrity are also Core Concepts to the functioning of that individual or reality, in addition to Survival, Desire, and Power. Because it activates and utilizes all of the energies up to the 5th chakra.
I think this is what people are really talking about with the "4D Earth" and "5D Earth" for example. A world and entire universe maybe with higher evolved concepts that are not simply taken as a passing fancy, but Core aspects that require consideration in every part of life and living.
...but that has nothing to do with the physical world... only of the actions taken by those in it.
3) Dimensions as Parallel Dimensions, where each possibility is like its own universe and we are navigating through a countless number of these possibilities with every moment that passes by.
But all Parallel Dimensions are associated with a Single Universe, they are all possibilities that universe may have created, and really they represent the Holographic Reality of what that Universe IS.
From beginning to end, that Universe is a single product, and the countless Parallel Dimensions are just places of perspective from within that Universe.
If you were to travel to a Parallel Dimension you would actually just be Changing your present reality, since you are within that Universe and that parallel dimension is just another aspect of that same universe. This is how Manifestation has always worked.
4) Dimensions as Alternate Realities - actual Other Universes that have their own history and maybe even a different set of physics.
If you think of a Universe as a sandbox to play in, an Alternate Reality would be a sandbox down the street. Like the parallel dimensions within a single universe, there are also an infinite number of Alternate Realities too.
When it comes to Alternate Realities, if you were to travel there you would actually be going to a completely different place, and it would not necessarily affect Your Reality back home.
So really there are alot of different meanings that we attribute to the word "Dimension" so you have to be specific with what you are talking about. We don't really have specific words for these concepts because they are so Obscure (occult) that words were never created for them.
Dimensions? Spiritual Evolution? Parallel Dimensions? Alternate Realities? These are all pretty vague terms to use for core intrinsic aspects of our reality.

In terms of numbering a dimension we can of course follow math costume, which makes sense. But anyway. It is a game of reality and possibilities finding it`s expression according conditions the holographic wholeness in every part of being wants to unfold.
I doubt any necessity of getting "advenced" by wanting to enter higher dimensions, as if that would automaticly advence the status of being as advanced being. Any dimensionsl "jump" is according the will of being wanting to unfold. Therefore, as I perceive, every status of being is without regard to a deep connection to be - ness and thus the Ground of Being - there is connectness at every status.
And should there be any advancement or evolution towards any higher dimension - ok, then let it be, but please without exposing concepts suggesting, this would better happen by more development of conscience. No, it will not! It will only happen, if it is intended NOT in me, as if I have a special status (actually I is an illusion), but intended in being itself wanting to unfold. For it is being finding itself within me (which I call I) thus exposing conscience, conscience is being of being and thus source and unfolding process of, in and with being.
But I need more time to get a better image of it...
