You meet someone and begin to love that person. Just hormones? Never mind! You love, and you know it without any questions.

Your family might ask you why you fucking love that person they know as being not worthy to love. They will tell you this and that. You can`t love her! Please, wake up!

But you love her. You can´t even prove itt why she is worthy that you love her. You simply do, even without being able to prove it. No evidence. You family is convinced you are wrong. But you love her.

See, this is the principle of love, which is the mightiest force in the whole universe: if she comes to you, you know it even without any evidence. Love is a thing coming to you or not. If not, it is ok too. But if so, you know it.

In my profession as philosopher I have come to a real sober state of living over the years. Especially intelligent people with academical merits find it a heavy burden when it comes to what I call "inner knowledge". Highly sophisticated minds do often look for waterproof evidence. For instance when it comes to God or spiritual matters.

The trap of evidence in this regard leads finally to the insight, that there is no waterproof evidence at all. There is no evidence of God, even in case you believe it. You know why? Because to all you serve as evidence I can find an opposite view, always.

But this is not the case. The case is this: when it comes to God or even angels, we actually deal with love matters, always. A theoretical God is not more than a good thought, but there is a difference between thought and reality. I`m not talking from a thought - God. I`m dealing with a happening which happens and has to do with love. I do not believe in God, because I know of him. The reason is - beyond any waterproof evidence - that I love him, as he loves me. No, I can`t prove it. It is a love affair, similar to the person I described at the beginning.

The God and Jesus thing is a love affair which is vivid beyond any evidence. Of xourse we can ask if a love affair is a living one or destructive. That is another question. In case you pretend to love somebody or something you will fail feeling that deep connection. In fact, all you love becomes real in a certain way.

There is a nice little book called The Velveteen Rabbit I wish you would all have read it. Some may remember when you were kids. A friend of mine who worked as a drug therapist, an outstanding lady who passed away last year, used this story once in a while in her therapy with difficult kids. She simply let them read the lines in their sessions...

  • Yup, when you love them, you love them for who they are for just being them, warts and all.  It is something you just know, your heart tells you loud and clearly...

  • I loved that book velveteen rabbit ever since I got it for my first son many many years ago.  Every time I sat and read it to him I had tears in my eyes....I read it to all my foster kids I raised over the years and my youngest son too. It was always a favorite with all my children I loved and cared for.  Here is one really poignant part of the book that has always stuck in my mind and brings tears to my eyes still.  So very true of life.

"Real isn't how you are made," said the Skin Horse. "It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real."

"Does it hurt?" asked the Rabbit.

"Sometimes," said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. "When you are Real you don't mind being hurt."

"Does it happen all at once, like being wound up," he asked, "or bit by bit?"

"It doesn't happen all at once," said the Skin Horse. "You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand."

My kids used to tell me I was making them REAL because I was always hugging and wooling them, so I realized they understood the book.  Now my grandson has that same book and a new generation is enjoying it.  For me it is the best children's book yet because it teaches about unconditional love from the very start of their lives.

Great post, and a great trip down memory lane for me.  Love is real and makes things real.
