NASA to Reveal Big News From Planet-Hunting Spacecraft Thursday

NASA is expected to make an announcement Thursday on the progress of its Kepler spacecraft, which has been staring at one patch of space for evidence of other worlds.

The space agency has scheduled an afternoon teleconference with reporters to announce the results from Kepler, which include the "discovery of an intriguing planetary system," NASA officials said Monday.


Participating in the teleconference will be senior NASA scientists and Kepler mission researchers, including principal investigator William Borucki, at the space agency's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif.


The Kepler space observatory hunts for Earth-like planets around other stars. In June, mission scientists announced it had found over 700 candidates, including five systems that appear to have more than one transiting planet.


The spacecraft monitors stars for subtle changes in their brightness, which could indicate that alien planets are passing in front of them as seen from Earth. To date, astronomers have discovered more than 400 planets lurking around stars beyond our solar system.

NASA launched the $600 million spacecraft in March 2009. It is currently staring at a patch of the Milky Way that contains over 156,000 stars – a star field in the constellations Cygnus and Lyra.


Astronomers have been using the data from Kepler to determine whether orbiting planets are responsible for the variation in brightness of several hundred stars.


Follow-up observations are necessary to distinguish between actual planets and false alarms  such as binary stars, which are two stars that orbit each other.

    Yes, the real space program, including the bases on the moon and mars, and the anti gravitational craft they use to get there. It does seem strange that the space program peaked with the "moon landing" more than 40 years ago. Since then we have been going backwards!(at least officially)

    It seems funny that while Nasa is looking for other Planets... beings from other Planets are looking at Planet Earth.
    They have big plans to make big changes on Planet Earth and...Nasa included.

      Funny indeed Ravinder. But of course beings from other planets have the advantage of hiding themselves from us while we cannot hide from them. :-)

        True Higher Dimension beings can see us but our vision is limited to the 3rd Dimension only. Only if someone is very Spiritual they can then have Spiritual Vision.
        The Divine Plan is to restore Planet Earth to its original state and this will be done with the help from beings of Higher Dimensions who are here NOW...so Nasa as usual is wasting time and money looking for other Planets but should and we all should CONCENTRATE ON PLANET EARTH.
        As Lord Adama says HEAVEN IS A PLACE YOU CAN CREATE ON EARTH.

    I find your guys "anti-american" feelings a little disconcerting and offensive!? Instead of complaining about stuff why don't you DO SOMETHING about it!?....get involved?....write your congressman?.....BE a part of the SOLUTION!?

    Oh wait that would mean you'd have to be AMERICANS, that's right!? I guess that leaves you at a dead end huh?

      I dont know how exactly you managed to construe my message as anti American, I am absolutely nothing of the sort. However I AM anti illuminati, I am anti people hiding the truth from us, I am anti people wasting money when the answers are right infront of us, I am anti all the liars and criminals that work for the US government. I want to see honest, decent people in leadership roles in the USA, free of illuminati control.

      WOW!!! Someone that actually believes the system works. I thought they were extinct. Sorry to be sarcastic, I'm only kidding and it's in response to your downgrading attitude, forgive me won't u? Anyways, eventually you'll see that many of us have tried those avenues just to realize that it's a rigged game, the real "dead end"... Let us know if you get anywhere with that =)
