If the anscient men gave food for their slaves to prevent them from dieng and hence loosing the labour, it makes sense to define a slave as the guy who works painfully for another person for mere food. (and perharps cloths and housing). It is irrellevant what causes pain, as long as its painfull. If your morden master uses the hand of another guy to whip you doesn't matter, its painfull. In morden slavery, it is the slaves themselves who look disperately for masters. 2.) One slave can serve more than one master (from your employer to your landloard).
