Government is the “most important” problem facing the country, according to the majority of Americans.

The declaration was made by 18 percent of respondents in a Gallup survey. Americans were asked “what do you think is the most important problem facing this country today?”

Seven percent more people said Government was the biggest problem than the second placed problem of the economy. Unemployment was third placed, with illegal immigration and healthcare joint fourth.

Terrorism was listed as the next biggest problem, but three times less people cited it over government.

“While dissatisfaction with government is by no means a new issue to the American people, it has not in recent months been as clearly the leading problem as it is now, given that fewer Americans mention the economy,” Gallup’s Justin McCarthy wrote.

The pollster also noted that two-thirds of Americans continue to be dissatisfied with the direction of the US.

Trend: Satisfaction With the Direction of the U.S.

The findings come on the heels of a 2014 General Social Survey, which noted that Americans’ confidence in all three branches of government is at or near record lows.

The survey discovered that just 23 percent of Americans have ‘a great deal of confidence’ in the Supreme Court, only 11 percent in the executive branch and a paltry 5 percent in Congress.

“If there’s one issue than unites Americans, it’s that hardly anyone has much confidence in Congress,” the AP notes.

“Over half of Americans express hardly any confidence at all, while only 7 percent of Democrats, 5 percent of independents and 3 percent of Republicans have a great deal of confidence in Congress.” the report adds.

The survey also found that confidence in the media is at a record low, with only 7 percent declaring high confidence.
