Actually the nation went on life support after JFK was murdered. We got supplied with cocaine from Columbia, disco music from Latin America, Quaaludes from Rorer, and heroin from Marseilles and Vietnam. We also had a U.S. president tell an aircraft carrier commander to let Israel sink a U.S. scout ship in the Mediterranean Sea (known as the USS Liberty). We also had a 33rd degree freemason for a president who agreed with the Warren Commission that Oswald was able to shoot a bullet through a Texas live oak tree and still kill a U.S. President (but this same president couldn't shoot golf for sh#t).
