Sandy is Powerful and Still Intensifying
Measurements taken early Monday morning by Air Force reconnaissance aircraft indicated an alarming drop in Hurricane Sandy's central pressure.
After hovering near an already-impressive 950 millibars much of Sunday night, the pressure suddenly dropped to about 942 millibars before 6 a.m. Eastern time. Maximum winds strengthened from 75 mph to at least 85 mph.
Central pressure is an indication of the strength of a storm. Its effects are felt in the form of wind. Storms of this strength can produce either a focused core of catastrophic winds -- or, in the case of Sandy, an extremely large region of strong winds pushing an enormous amount of water toward the East Coast
