Researchers in Cambridge and Aberdeen say food production could cause targets for greenhouse gas emissions to be exceeded in 2050Meat-heavy diets mean that project food demands will not be met for an expected 9.6 billion world population in 30 yearsIncreased deforestation, fertiliser use and livestock methane will raise emissions by up to 80 per centExperts say better global food security without using more land is neededEating less meat is 'essential' to ensure future demand for food can be met and 'dangerous' climate change avoided, experts have warned.A study by leading university researchers in Cambridge and Aberdeen found food production alone could exceed targets for greenhouse gas emissions in 2050 if current trends continue.Population growth and the global shift towards 'meat-heavy Western diets' has meant increasing agricultural yields will not meet projected food demands for an expected 9.6 billion world population in 30 years, according to the researchers.Researchers in Cambridge and Aberdeen say food production could cause targets for greenhouse gas emissions to be exceeded in 2050. Meat-heavy diets mean that project food demands will not be met for an expected 9.6 billion world population in 30 yearsIncreased deforestation, fertiliser use and livestock methane emissions are likely to cause greenhouse gas emissions from food production to rise by almost 80 per cent, experts from the University of Cambridge and University of Aberdeen found.COULD EATING LESS MEAT AND DAIRY MITIGATE CLIMATE CHANGE?A report released earlier this year came to similar conclusions, that emissions from agriculture threaten to keep increasing as global meat and dairy consumption increases. If agricultural emissions are not addressed, nitrous oxide from fields and methane from livestock may double by 2070. This alone would make meeting the climate target essentially impossible.'We have shown that reducing meat and dairy consumption is key to bringing agricultural climate pollution down to safe levels,' said Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden.'Broad dietary change can take a long time. We should already be thinking about how we can make our food more climate friendly.'By 2050, estimates indicate that beef and lamb will account for half of all agricultural greenhouse gas emissions, while only contributing three per cent of human calorie intake.Cheese and other dairy products will account for about one quarter of total agricultural climate pollution.Read Full Article @ http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2739143/Less-meat-key-food-security.html

  • thats been known for couple of decades now , around vegan and raw foods circles. I know people who warned about this 30 or so yrs ago . We need to educate those who dont believe in such scenario and dire possibility if humanitycontinues its meat based , destructive life styles..................

    • Not very easy to educate animal flesh eaters ..countless times they have been told about animal rights, told to visit slaughterhouses, told about meat lowering their vibes and causing various diseases, told about unknown ingredients added in meat that they are not aware of but they still consume animal flesh ... Told them you are what you eat but they still eat dead animal flesh.
The biggest change on this planet would be for all to be vegetarians or vegans.
To Close down all slaughterhouses, close down butcher shops and selling meat in stores, stop killing animals ...stop selling/ buying dead animal flesh...stop eating dead animal flesh... This would be one of the biggest change on Planet Earth
Beings on this planet need to wake up and give up zombie type of lifestyle and become humans
