  Great observation.  I have noticed people connecting more here in Florida.  When I am at the supermarket I noticed that people seem to talk more to each other while standing in line, having real conversations although they are all strangers to one another.  People seem to stop to let people cross to the supermarket in the parking lots which never seemed to happen.  Usually the drivers expected the pedestrians to get out of their way....but lately people are showing courtesy in the parking lots, which is amazing to me.  So many times in the past I have been practically hit and mowed over in the parking lots at places because the drivers just did not give a crap about people walking about, lol.    It just seems like everyone is being more polite and more human with one another, and I see a lot of smiling faces everywhere I go.  So I do see a lot more connectedness, I find myself even gabbing away with people I do not know when out and about, which I never did.  People I do not know and pass on the street take the time to say things like good morning, isn't this a wonderful day, and things like that recently.  Seems to be on the increase.  I really like it.
