The Trump administration’s Selective Service System published a request last week asking vendors to create a computer simulation so the agency can test scenarios for a national military draft.
Military Times reported on the news Friday, noting, “The ‘Readiness Simulation’ project comes as the U.S. government is about to change its draft registration system.”
President Trump in 2025 signed a law altering the Military Selective Service Act to automatically register men aged 18 to 26 for a national draft beginning on Dec. 19, 2026.
The Selective Service System told Military Times in response to a request for quote, “SSS currently relies on manual analysis, legacy modeling approaches, outdated assumptions, and historical datasets that do not fully reflect modern demographics, communications channels, throughput constraints, or operational readiness conditions.”
The SSS contract request described what it’s looking for, writing, “SSS seeks a simulation model that in preparation for any national emergency, it enables the Agency to: 1) Evaluate staffing and resource requirements 2) Compare mobilization and policy scenarios 3) Assess the operational impact of surge conditions 4) Identify throughput risks, delays, and bottlenecks 5) Support executive planning and reporting obligations. The Contractor shall design, develop, validate, document, and deliver a Government-owned readiness simulation (RS) that: 1) Models the full end-to-end SSS mobilization pipeline 2) Supports configurable scenarios 3) Provides decision-support analytics necessary for leadership, planners, and operators. 4) Operates within an SSS-designated cloud environment 5) Uses anonymized aggregate data 6) Supports complete Government ownership and sustainment.”
Computer models will “represent MEPS [Military Entrance Processing Stations] throughput, no-shows, medical disqualification rates, claims processing, and ASP diversion,” according to the Military Times request for quote.
Vendors have until August 14 to turn in their simulation models.
The U.S. Army also expanded its recruiting pool in March by raising the maximum enlistment age from 35 years old to 42, clearly indicating American forces are undermanned and the Pentagon is struggling to recruit.
Amid the ongoing Iran war that has no sign of slowing down anytime soon and the attempt to integrate the Israeli military with U.S. forces, the government’s game-planning of a national draft is unsettling to say the least.
