To honour Christ it’s timely to tell a tale of three wise kings. I’m not talking about the mystical Magi. It’s the Kings of Rock, Reggae and Soul whose song of praise I’ll sing.
The King of Rock is Elvis Presley. He had the voice of an angel with a heart and soul to match. His generosity is legend, giving greatly to large lists of charities and individuals.
Elvis had a lot of cash to cast about and he handed it out in proportionally vast amounts. In addition to his gifts of cash and clobber he was a humble gentle man who lived for love.
The king of Reggae is Bob Marley. "He made music to uplift, inform, entertain, and inspire; to change the world. He's a musician, a poet and songwriter, a philosopher, a soldier, an activist and a leader."(Cedella Marley)
Mr Marley’s music is a revolutionary sound track. The first words officially spoken in the then new nation Zimbabwe were “Ladies and gentleman, Bob Marley and the Wailers”. Now over 30 years later “get up stand up” is the tune that unites the “Occupy Wall Street” protests.
The king of Soul is James Brown. He was far and away the funkiest man on the planet for over 60 years of high powered performance.
Outside music he strongly advocated education. Indeed he left most of his estate to the “I feel good fund” benefiting disadvantaged kids. He also advocated for civil rights throughout his career. He’s credited as personally holding back black Boston riots after the revered Rev. King was killed.
These kings were much more than their music, though their musical gifts were as good as gold, frankincense and myrrh. The hearts of these three wise Kings made the world a better place. They weren’t as highly holy as Christ yet great things did they do, so proving you can too.
