LifeSiteNews) — A Catholic child suffering from brain cancer has testified that the Blessed Virgin Mary herself assured him he would recover.
Thirteen-year-old Dominic Auricchio, an eighth-grader at Holy Trinity School in Westfield, New Jersey, says the Virgin Mary gave him this consoling message in May 2023 before his brain tumor dramatically shrank.
According to an interview published by the New York Post this past Saturday, Dominic says Our Lady appeared in his bedroom.
“She was dressed just like we imagine her… and she told me that everything would be OK,” he said.
Dominic had been experiencing headaches for some time when a December 2022 MRI revealed a large mass in his brain. His mother Maria said the family and doctors were reluctant to pursue surgery because of the location of the mass and the need to cut into bone.
The following May, Dominic said, he had a vision of the Virgin. A month later, his family received the results of another scan. “There’s no reason to move forward with the surgery,” Maria recalled doctors telling the family. She added that subsequent MRIs now show what appears to be only “a very small blip.”
The family’s account does not establish a medical explanation for the change.
A pious child, Dominic remained committed to his Catholic faith after his diagnosis. He told the Post that he was “praying non-stop.”
His mother recalled one particularly striking moment when she heard him speaking to God in the back of the family car. “He’s just going, ‘I’m just too young to die’… very matter of fact and calm,” Maria said.

The apparently miraculous recovery has strengthened Dominic’s vocational aspirations and led him to talk about an earlier mystical experience. When he was four years old, he says, he had a dream in which God told him to become a priest.
“I had a dream and God came to me,” Dominic recalled. “He told me to be a priest, and then I went into my mom’s bedroom… it was the middle of the night… and ever since then I’ve wanted to become a priest.”
However, his plans evolved over the years. His mother remembered him once announcing that he wanted to become “the first priest astronaut.” He now says he hopes to become a Marine before entering the priesthood. His father served two tours in Iraq as a Marine and received a Purple Heart.
Dominic is currently active in the Church as an altar server and volunteer for an autistic congregant in his parish.
The boy’s story was recognized by the Archdiocese of Newark this year. In his winning submission to Cardinal Tobin Essay and Video Contest, Dominic described his religious experiences and his desire to become a priest.
In his video, Dominic also provided further details about the apparition of the Virgin. “One night, I woke up and told my mom there was a woman in my room. She was wearing blue with something covering her head. My mom asked me if it was Our Blessed Mather, and I said yes. I told her that Mary said not to worry, that I was going to be okay. And that’s something I always try to remember. God is always with me and I trust in him every day.”
“Priesthood is a life of service, sacrifice and joy, centered on Jesus,” he added in the video. “I trust that God is guiding me step by step. And I hope to answer his call one day.”
The contest came during another difficult period in Dominic’s health. In March 2026, he spent six days in hospital recovering from what he described as his fifth seizure since December. The causes of his seizures remained unknown.
“These experiences have helped me understand how other people feel when they are scared or hurting,” Dominic said. “I want to be someone who brings comfort and hope.”
