Going Deeper with the Reiki Symbols
Traditionally, the symbols are a major part of Usui Reiki, especially at Level 2 where students discover how to use them for healing and manifestation.
There is generally less emphasis on symbols in Angelic Reiki, as the practitioner doesn’t need to decide whether to use them, or which symbols to use, because the healing Angel takes care of that.
However, whatever Reiki system you have learned, it can be very helpful to deepen your understanding and connection with the symbols.
Below are a few simple ways to meditate with them. These practices can help you become calmer, more relaxed, and more connected to the essence of each symbol.
If you set an intention — perhaps to understand the qualities of a symbol more deeply — you may receive insights through thoughts, images, feelings, or experiences, either during the meditation or afterwards.
But don’t be disappointed if nothing obvious happens. You will still be strengthening your connection with the symbol, making it easier to work with in your healing practice. Over time, these and other Reiki meditations can help you feel more centred, focused, organised, and peaceful, with benefits touching the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual levels.
Meditating on the Symbols
The symbols and their mantras can be used as a focus for meditation, helping to quieten the mind and bring a sense of calm and relaxation.
Our minds are almost always busy, so whenever thoughts arise, simply let them go and gently return your attention to either the shape of the symbol or the sound of its mantra.
Chanting the Mantra
You can use the name of the symbol as a mantra, allowing the sound to take you deeper within yourself. This can be done aloud or silently.
Visualise or draw the symbol with your finger and begin to chant its name. Traditionally this is often done in a monotone voice. Continue for as long as feels comfortable.
I’ve worked with the Usui symbols in this way several times chanting the mantras silently and found that it helped me connect more deeply with the essence and qualities of each symbol.
Contemplation
Contemplation is found in almost every spiritual tradition and can help develop a deep sense of serenity.
Close your eyes and visualise the symbol. Say its name three times, then spend a few minutes breathing slowly and deeply while focusing on it.
With this practice, short periods of focused attention — up to 10 to 15 minutes — are usually more effective than longer sessions. Try working with one symbol every day for a week before moving on to another.
Stepping into the Symbols
The Reiki symbols can also be experienced as three-dimensional forms with height, width, and depth.
Try drawing a symbol large in the air and imagining it stretching out into the distance. Then visualise yourself stepping into it. Allow the essence of the symbol to permeate your body and mind and simply remain open to any inspiration or insights that arise.
The Distance Symbol
The distance symbol can be especially powerful in meditation.
You might imagine it connecting you with your future self, forming a bridge through time. This can become a deeply insightful experience, allowing you to connect with the part of yourself that has already achieved a goal or moved through a challenge.
You can also use the distance symbol to connect with spiritual beings such as Angels or Ascended Masters, or with places on the earth plane or astral plane, strengthening your energetic connection with them.
