All comets have "remnants" after their passage around the Sun. A comet is nothing but a "big dirty snowball," and its tail is the water vapor burning off as it approaches the Sun. Most of the ice is either burned off or destroyed following the "sling shot effect." ISON is behaving just like every other comet that has orbited the Sun, and will probably return again many hundreds of years from now (with a larger amount of ice and debris than what we see now, and to once again be burned off in the form of a tail as it approaches the Sun).
