Investigation: Many Herbal Supplements Found to Contain ZERO HerbsFor the millions who shop for store-brand herbal supplements at mega retailers like Walmart, you’re in for a big surprise. An investigation by the New York State attorney general’s office into store-brand supplements has found that many herbal supplements not not only contain arguably no herbs, but also don’t contain the main ingredient/herb advertised.The investigation targeted 4 national retailers — GNC, Target, Walgreens and Wal-Mart, each of which received cease-and-desist letters demanding that a number of their supplements be taken off the market. In addition to containing phony filler and potential unlisted allergens, many of these supplements didn’t even contain the herbs shown on their labels.“Contamination, substitution and falsely labeling herbal products constitute deceptive business practices and, more importantly, present considerable health risks for consumers,” said the letters.As reported by the New York Times:“The tests were conducted using a process called DNA barcoding, which identifies individual ingredients through a kind of ‘genetic fingerprinting.’ The investigators tested 24 products claiming to be seven different types of herb — echinacea, garlic, gingko biloba, ginseng, saw palmetto, St. John’s wort and valerian root.     All the herbal remedies I've ever taken have ALL of the herbs listed on the ingredient labels... Don't believe everything you read ~ there is a lot of disinfo out there!

    Sounds like there are some people in the business that will be going to jail soon. Covering up allergens in food is usually equal to the crime "attempted murder". ;)

    KRISHNA: thanks for including GNC on your list of snake-oil corporations, as I have had bad experiences with buying herbs from them.  YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. Go local and pay extra; you will not be disappointed.

    As reported by the New York Times:

    This is really nasty as taking this Herbal Medicine causes more harm then good and this keeps people addicted to herbal medicines not knowing they are cheated and since they are not cured they take more for longer periods ...nasty business.
    Now the point is how many more companies are selling fake/false herbal medicines.

    Wholefoods stock of herbal medicines are a suspect now as well

    Now this is really nasty ...extreamly bad as now you cannot trust the lables ingredients specified
