Quiet amazing and wonderful to know... a place to see for explorers and adventurers.

  • The Into The Glacier experience will transport visitors into the heart of Europe's second largest glacier
  • The unusual attraction was the brainchild of two adventure tour operators in Iceland
  • Visitors will be able to walk the half-mile route and see the ice change colour from white to deep blue
  • The attraction costs from £87 for a two-three hour tour, and exclusive access tour costs £1,306

It is the attraction that well and truly puts the 'ice' in Iceland.

And the unusual Into The Glacier experience is set to open to the public next month, allowing them to plunge into the heart of Europe's second-largest glacier.

The biggest man-made ice cave in the world stretches 2,624ft into the Langjökull glacier in the midwest highlands of Iceland.

The tunnel, which at its deepest point, is nearly 1000ft below the surface of the glacier, leads on to a series of intricately carved interior chambers, including a small chapel which can be used for underground weddings.

The beautiful aquamarine ice can even serve as a bride's 'something blue'.

Surrounded by nature, tours will allow visitors to stand in the glacier with 1,900ft of ice below their feet, when it opens on June 1.

Guests will not only be the first in the world to experience the manmade ice cap glacier tunnel, but will also witness the incredible west Iceland scenery on the way to the ice cave, which can be accessed by glacier truck or even by helicopter.

Standing at 4,760 ft above sea level, the exclusive attraction displays ice stretching as far as the eye can see, concealed by a mysterious entrance of the ice tunnel, almost hidden in the ice face.

Once guests step inside the magnificent glacier, they will be able to explore the winding chambers, and experience the pinnacle of the ice-cold experience in the form of a glacial crevasse.

But the attraction isn't a walk in the park. Tour operators will supply warm clothing and crampons so that visitors can enjoy the attraction safely.

They also warn that as tourists descend lower into the tunnel they will notice a big difference in temperature.

Perfectly illuminated by LED lights, the magical location will be available for weddings, parties, meetings and other functions

The tour into the cave itself takes about two to three hours, but can be booked as part of a day trip from Reykjavik

The creative idea was born from the minds of adventure tour operators, Baldvin Einarsson and Hallgrímur Örn Arngrímsson in 2010, who had the revolutionary vision to not only show people the glacier, but to take them to the heart of the remote natural wonder.

They also wanted people to witness the breathtaking ‘blue ice’ which is buried deep beneath the glacier surface.

Backed by a team of engineers, specialist construction workers, and one of Iceland’s leading Geo-Physicists and Glacial Experts, it is hoped the icy attraction will clearly demonstrate the beauty of Iceland’s wondrous landscape.

Packages for the frozen adventure begin at £87 (17,900 ISK) for a two to three hour tour, and rise to a whopping £1,306 (268,500 ISK) for an exclusive tour.
