TURIN, ITALY, July 21, 2016 (The Guardian): From vitello tonnato - veal with tuna sauce - to beef braised in the Piedmont region's most famous red wine, brasato al Barolo, meat dishes have been central to the food tradition of northern Italy for centuries. But Chiara Appendino, the new mayor of Turin and a force in the populist Five Star Movement (M5S), could be about to change all that with her pledge this week to promote vegetarian and vegan diets as a "priority" in her administration.

According to M5S's 62-page manifesto - which also called for better urban planning and the protection of public land - Turin's new mayor said the endorsement of meat-free and even dairy-free living was fundamental to the protection of the environment, health, and the wellbeing of animals. While the specifics of the strategy have not been disclosed, the city is expected to set up educational projects in schools to teach students about animal welfare and nutrition.

The move is unprecedented in Italian municipal government, but is in keeping with the views of the eurosceptic M5S. The party espouses some progressive values, such as environmentalism, conservation and green energy, but is ambiguous on migration and did not support a recent extension of parental rights to LGBT Italians.

  • Wow, great news. The Shift is happening, step by step.... :))))

    • One of the Members was suggesting a Vegan City in the states ...hope it comes to be ...then more good can follow

      • Two new veggie restaurants have opened here in Perth in the last few years, and the vegan/vegetarian foods available now on the supermarket shelves is huge compared to even five years ago, including about ten different plant-based types of milk at my local supermarket (almond milk, soy milk, oat milk, coconut milk, macadamia milk etc).

So there is a shifting in consciousness happening.

I also read this morning from the humane Society International that for the first time ever, the World Bank has included farm animal welfare standards in who/what projects it will lend to. In their draft policy, this includes no lending to farms that include battery cages, sow stalls etc.

Actually coming to a whole recognition of the ethics on enslaving other species to eat, wear, use in entertainment and experiment on is a step by step process in the collective consciousness....but I see many more people becoming aware of the human/animal relationship needing to change. Most of my Earth family, who are mainstream in their outlook, have reduced the amount of meat they eat each week by as much as half...and also accommodate my vegan/fruitarian diet these days instead of mocking it or worrying that I'll become ill - which is what mainstream programming has instilled in people.

        Step by step......

"That is a scary scary weapon. I don't think it will ever happen again not in this galaxy, but lets hope these weapons are never used again. These things are way to powerful."
