Traditionally a summer staple, nature and science-based nuture is being used to grow hi-tech tomatoes all year round in a huge greenhouse in Suffolk.

To give it its proper title the 'hydroponics module airglasshouse' at the Blakenham Nursery site at Bramford near Ipswich covers the area of 11 football pitches.

It's the most technologically advanced farming of its kind in the UK.

A carbon dioxide enriched air filter system, nutrient-enriched water, red LED lights and controlled summer-like conditions all help the plants grow at an optimum rate.

Each tomato plant will grow at 35cm per week eventually reaching up to 15 metres in height.

The tomatoes are watered entirely with recycled rainwater and condensation
The entire greenhouse is bathed in pink LEDs as the plants need artificial light

  • Why storing tomatoes in a fridge is a bad idea plus remember tomato is a fruit

Most foodies warn against storing tomatoes in the fridge, saying it saps them of their flavor. New research confirms this culinary opinion, revealing the way cold temperatures prevent critical flavor-enhancing genes from doing their job.

To extend the shelf-life of agricultural products like tomatoes, many of us resort to the tried-and-true practice of cold storage. Putting our produce in the fridge may prolong freshness and inhibit decomposition, but for at least one fruit (yes, tomatoes are a fruit), there’s an important tradeoff to consider: taste.

  • Quiet a lot of people buy organic tomatoes grown in organic conditions more naturally then in greenhouses ... NOW WHICH ONE ARE BETTER ? If it’s organic tomatoes then why bother with greenhouse ones and if it’s greenhouse ones why bother with organic tomatoes?

Some people of course will just buy any tomatoes not caring how they are grown or where they come from but we want to go  for taste and goodness of the tomatoes
