For propulsion, Orion relies on the service moduleās main engine and smaller thrusters. These use hypergolic propellantsātypically monomethylhydrazine fuel and nitrogen tetroxide oxidizerāwhich ignite automatically on contact, ensuring reliability for critical maneuvers in space. These engines are used for major burns such as sending the spacecraft toward the Moon and adjusting its trajectory. Orionās mission profile for Artemis II involves a free-return trajectory around the Moon, meaning the spacecraft will loop around the Moon and naturally head back to Earth without needing major propulsion for the returnāan important safety design. The spacecraft will travel thousands of miles beyond the Moon before returning to Earth for a high-speed reentry.
Although Orion is mainly a transport vehicle, it carries important scientific equipment. Artemis II will include experiments studying how radiation and microgravity affect human biology, such as tissue-chip experiments that simulate human organs in space. The mission will also test new communication technologies and spacecraft systems needed for future deep-space missions. Cameras aboard Orion will capture high-resolution images of the Moon, including surface features and iconic views like Earthrise, helping scientists refine landing sites and navigation for later missions.
