Mentalism — First of the Seven Hermetic Lawsby Bruce Rawles(This article was excerpted and adapted from the upcoming book, "The Geometry Code: Symbolic Wisdom of Natural Laws Within Us" by Bruce Rawles, available soon from Elysian Publishing. This is the second of eight articles; you might want to first read the initial article in the series to get the context for this one."All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players: They have their exits and their entrances." — William ShakespeareThe Seven Hermetic LawsAncient Hermetic principles were allegedly sealed except to those with eyes to see and ears to hear. Perhaps the importance of timeless laws, like the profound wisdom that can be found in even the simplest of every day geometric symbols, is hidden in plain sight. This series of articles links the metaphysical implications of seven Hermetic Laws with seven ubiquitous symbols, each of which have countless variations that appear in our familiar physical world, ever present reminders of the vibrant, lucid presence we all share that leads us to the unimaginably wonderful truth about ourselves. The symbols chosen for these articles were inspired by a book called the Kybalion: A Study of the Hermetic Philosophy of Ancient Egypt and Greece by the Three Initiates, originally published in 1912, an unassuming work that explains the Seven Natural (or Hermetic) Laws of Truth, attributed to the wisdom of ancient Egypt. The seven symbols in the illustrations for each article each represent one of these natural laws, which are stated as: Mentalism, Correspondence, Vibration, Polarity, Rhythm, Cause & Effect, and Generation or Gender. The meaning behind the symbols — the laws involved in every aspect of our lives — is what is most important; the symbols are merely placeholders, just as our physical lives represent the infinite, multidimensional nature of our souls. As magnificent and boggling as our physical bodies and this material Universe appear to be, they are but shadows of the even greater awe-inspiring reality of our meta-personal, holographic, multi-dimensional existence. The bodies we tend to be preoccupied with, and the thoughts we tend to obsess over and identify with, are like droplets and waves, respectively, in the vast ocean of our true, boundless selves.Recent popularity of books, DVDs and other media such as "The Secret", "What The Bleep", "The Da Vinci Code", "A New Earth", and countless others attest to our innate yearning to more deeply understand and integrate timeless laws of truth; to make meaningful application of cosmic principles as they pertain to our lives as beings within the realm of human experience. Our true unlimited selves intrinsically want to go beyond the confines of the paradigm of the limited egoic self. The experience of transcendence is beyond what we can describe with words or even symbols, yet when we pay attention to how our lives and everything in them participates in the unyielding drama of natural law, we begin to notice patterns that can be generalized, abstracted and distilled into rules that apply any where, and any when to taking us "home" (where we've always been) and awaken us to our eternal inheritance… a world forever free and at peace. The images we recognize as global symbols can reflect deeper understanding that exists within us all. Symbols, interpreted by a mind trained to relinquish addictions (or aversions) to isolated places and conditions, can remind us of a philosophical system of alchemy we can apply to any situation, as we forgive ourselves for identifying ourselves with the transient and petty. This is the alchemy of transmuting base experiences of 3-D life on planet Earth (the illusion of separation) into the golden understanding of the truth of our selves as co-creators, inseparable with the infinite. Symbols can act as signposts — mirrors of our awareness of interconnectedness — as we explore our own consciousness, recognize the interwoven context of inner and outer worlds, experience the amazingly diverse spectra of life, learn to transcend polarized thinking and feeling by allowing more compassion for ourselves and others, flow more effortlessly with the rhythms that life presents at every turn, become more adept at harnessing the stupendous fractal web of our individual and collective choices, and integrate the balancing lessons that come from grateful acknowledgment of the omnipresent creative wisdom in all life. The Law of Mentalism (Self Fulfilling Prophecy) — Keyword: LifeThe first of the seven laws or principles is given the name Mentalism in the Kybalion, along with the phrase "THE ALL is MIND; The Universe is Mental.""Everything you perceive is a witness to the thought system you want to be true."…"You see what you expect, and you expect what you invite. Your perception is a result of your invitation."… "There is nothing outside you." … "Minds are joined; bodies are not. …"You can enslave a body, but an idea is free, incapable of being kept in prison or limited in any way except by the mind that thought it. For it remains joined to its source, which is its jailer or its liberator, according to which it chooses as its purpose for itself."— A Course In Miracles, Text, pages 192, 214, 358, 359 and 374, respectively"The Cosmos is an utterly malleable experience that feeds back to us what we want to perceive." — Chris LadueThe law of Mentalism encompasses our entire thought system (a.k.a. reality), whether it be based on the truth that transcends the veils of space and time or the minuscule fragment of our personal experience, blinding ourselves to 'droplet perspective' in the midst of 'oceanic vastness'. This law, like the other six, applies to everything … there isn't any "thing" that doesn't exist apart from, or outside of mind. Every virtual reality movie you've seen has been telling you the truth (at least in this one respect); namely, that your so-called external world is fabricated from the perceptions you have invited through your thoughts and feelings, accumulated into ideas, beliefs, biases and points of view. This is how we can have about 7 billion humans, seemingly sharing the same planet, yet frequently embracing VERY different perspectives; we're all projecting different parts of the same holographic illusion from the lamps of our fragmented minds onto the screen of 3D manifestation. The Sufi story about the blind men and the elephant fits very well here; one blind man feels the elephant's ear and describes the animal as flat and thin, another, touching a leg relates that it is thick and cylindrical, yet another grasping the tail says that the elephant is like a rope. Each one, within the limited context of their finite senses, shares an incomplete, yet somewhat valid piece of the whole. None of them realizes that their own biases paint the same entity as different, while in fact; they are just isolated (and distorted) aspects of a greater truth. As we remember to apply this principle more routinely, we empower and bless our lives with much more compassion, tolerance, and genuine forgiveness (based on seeing "others" as "self", with nothing "out there" to forgive in the fleeting ephemera of events)! The Ineffable Oneness of All Life"If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite." — William Blake"You are a non-local being, having a local experience." — Gary RenardFathoming the infinite nature of mind and consciousness is somewhat akin to the perennial conundrum of asking a fish to describe water; we exist in a limitless ocean of mental energy, which includes feeling, thought, and expectation. Pure consciousness is at our center, the ineffable quintessence of life at the focus of each being. Mystical traditions inform us that all matter is permeated with consciousness, the one foundational principle that science tries in vain to localize in the context of an assumed finite material reference frame. Our prime awareness, eternal, unchanging in a Universe of change, defies definition, just as multiplying or dividing by infinity transcends rational logic. The Point and The Circle: Encompassing Nothing and Everything"A human being is a part of the whole, called by us, 'Universe,' a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest -- a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us.Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. No body is able to achieve this completely, but the striving for such achievement is in itself a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security." — Albert Einstein"We are the prisoners of the prisoners we have taken." — Johnny Clegg & Savuka (lyrics to the song "Jericho")The infinitesimal central point within a circle or sphere, whether explicit or implied, is the core of the singularity of our consciousness, existing within the realms of dimensions, yet dimensionless. Surrounding this pure consciousness is our sphere of awareness. From infancy, our domain expands from room to home to neighborhood to city to province to country to planet to galaxy and beyond; each sphere occupying a greater realm in our minds. Does the Universe exist in our imagination, or does our imagination exist in the Universe? Perhaps, as modern physics may suggest, we're living in a virtual reality film where we are the scriptwriters, directors, actors, choreographers, makeup artists, special effect technicians and we even do all our own stunts! The light at the end of the tunnel might just be the bulb in the projector of our consciousness, illuminating our path forever — the one steadfast, unchanging anchor in an unimaginably vast cosmic ocean of change. The knowingness that the "I AM" identity never changes, regardless of which act we play in, regardless of changes in the supporting cast, scenery, or other props, gives us an unshakable serene foundation to embrace all of life as the adventure that it is. The drama of human existence — in all its myriad forms — revolves around the spiritual center that is within you and every soul that has ever walked this planet. The nested shells of reality that surround us can be convincing illusions, yet the master key remains within, where the light of our central sun originates, the source of our oneness. The point at the center of the circle might represent the point of light (our mental focus) within us that either projects the "darkness" (incomplete 'droplet' of finite perception) or the radiant glow that fills the Universe with the calm knowingness and certainty of infinite wholeness — the complete 'ocean' of loving kindness that resides within the heart of all life. The circle, itself a limit-busting symbol since it contains the transcendental Pi proportion, appears to be finite, yet there are an infinite number of degrees around its perimeter, if one cared to keep adjusting the angle from the center more and more finely. It is also a singularity, in that it holds this infinity in a seemingly finite space. An effective tool for vaporizing paradoxes is to allow one's mind to consider the ultimate conclusion modern quantum physics moves us inexorably toward: the notion that space and time are truly bogus, fraudulent, or at the very least, incomplete models of reality; take any puzzle or challenge, from the most arcane to the most personal, and ask yourself if your issue is still an issue if space and time were abolished. This takes practice, but it could well be a universal solvent for any unsolvable problem… Try it! :-) It certainly knocks the wind out of any "we/they" paradigm, which in itself goes a long way toward healing the dis-ease of seeming separation.Mental Models:Identification with our shared Infinite Self or isolated finite selves"If you would be a real seeker after truth, it is necessary that at least once in your life you doubt, as far as possible, all things." Lesson 2, Workbook — Rene Descartes"You are a non-local being, having a local experience." — Gary Renard"I know I'm not seeing thing as they are, I'm seeing things as I am." — Laurel LeeThe bulk of this article describes the theory of the law of Mentalism and how our expectations operate an amazing factory that delivers our "reality" regardless of how we define it, 24/7, flawlessly in accord with the inner blueprint we authorize. The "lab assignment" for this law is basically to be kind to ourselves (to recognize the principle of Mentalism) — that all exists in our mind … at our request! — Every time we see or think about a point, a circle, a sphere or lines of light radiating out from a center, whether it is a light bulb, the sun or the smile from the next person you meet! We can use these mnemonic tools for the purpose of slowly but surely overhauling our beliefs, perceptions and projections into form for our benefit (as modern physics suggests we do every instant — see the prior article) into a happier illusion (since anything less than the totality of all life beyond space and time is necessarily incomplete) We might want to keep this law "in mind" :-)Copywrite 2008 Bruce Rawles.
