1300 new glyphs!
The newly discovered geoglyphs were much smaller and much fainter than the famous Nazca Lines. Over the past 2,000 years, windblown dust and weathering reduced the contrast between the exposed light-colored ground and the surrounding darker stones, making many figures nearly invisible from the air.
Researchers found them by:
Flying drones over the desert to collect extremely high-resolution aerial photographs.
Training an AI system using images of already known geoglyphs so it could recognize faint outlines that humans might overlook.
The AI identified more than 1,300 possible sites.
Archaeologists then walked to each location and verified the discoveries on foot. About 303 new geoglyphs were confirmed in the first major survey.
