Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is the proud new owner of a summer home in the Champlain Islands, Seven Days has confirmed.

The Burlington resident last week plopped down nearly $600,000 on a lakefront camp in North Hero.

Sanders’ new crib has four bedrooms and 500 feet of Lake Champlain beachfront on the east side of the island — facing Vermont, not New York. The Bern will keep his home in Burlington and use the new camp seasonally.

“We’ve traveled up to the islands many times over the years — almost always on day trips,” Sanders’ wife, Jane O’Meara Sanders, told Seven Days in a written statement. “We’ve been impressed with the North Hero community, eaten at the North Hero House and Shore Acres and have suggested them to friends who were looking for a beautiful place to stay or have dinner. St. Anne’s Shrine in Isle La Motte is my favorite church and it is nearby.”

Last Tuesday, the day of the closing, a relaxed-looking Bernie Sanders posed for a photo at Hero’s Welcome General Store on Route 2. The store, a bit south of his new abode, serves a sandwich called “Feel the Bun” in the senator’s honor. The $6.99 deli delight consists of a “HUGE” homemade roll, sliced turkey, fresh apple chutney, hot pepper relish, lettuce, tomato and provolone cheese.

“It’s not fair that the Billionaire Class controls 99 percent of the bread,” the menu description reads. “Here’s a sandwich for the rest of us … to keep us nourished until everything cool is free!”

  • FORGET YOU ANDROMEDAN. This was not posted under "Spirituality." This was posted under "Alternative Media, World Events, & News." Political events thus qualify for this category, and this includes events that reveal popular socialists (such as Sanders, who ran for U.S. President) to be exposed as a crony capitalist  hypocrite with this beachfront home purchase.

I welcome your "challenge" of celestial events; I was recently challenged in Santa Fe by someone who also has 30 years of astrology experience (if this is what you are referring to per "challenge").

Go back to Andromeda or go visit another category on this website, such as "Spirituality." You do not see me going to these other categories and trashing other peoples viewpoints.

    • WRONG AGAIN MICHAEL: I'm a JFK-type liberal who supports unity (like JFK did) and who believes in leaving everyone alone (as long as they don't hurt or rob anyone) AND who advocates less government (as JFK did).

JFK had many faults (such as blackmailing Hollywood starlets to have sex with him), but he created an economic blockbuster boom in the 1960's after he  lowered taxes on both people and corporations,  just like Putin is currently doing in Russia (AND THE RUSSIANS ARE CURRENTLY HAVING AN ECONOMIC RENNAISSANCE AT THIS TIME, WHILE WE HAVE IDIOTS LIKE SANDERS AND CLINTON WHO CLAIM THAT THE DOUBLING OF FOOD STAMP RECIPIENTS AT THIS TIME IS DUE TO "rich people and Wall Street" (who moved their money and businesses out of the U.S. due to the high taxes that these two government workers advocate)).

JFK did his homework and advocated more freedom for EVERYONE and less government,  just like Putin is currently doing.  It has nothing to do with "conservatism;" it's about treating everyone equally and advocating policies that create prosperity for everyone (and not to a few select people who financially contribute to one's political campaign).

  • no worries Malcolm , I would rarther support anything that promotes unity ( with idiots like you for example ) than division, racism  and seperation you champion.

  • Bernie was not a hypocrite when he bought an expensive house....he was actually proving his point....white man buys summer house.   Not sure what your point is that anyone who owns a house or has some money from working his whole life cannot care about injustice and poverty.......

  • big deal.......I own $480.000 home. So what ?..........dont you have something productive to do Malcolm ?

    • HEY MICHAEL: forget you. Exposing a popular Democrat as a hypocrite is productive at this time (regardless of what you may or may not have learned about politics in Chicago, Michael).

I was homeless at one time, I am white, and I know what it's like to be poor. For Sanders to state this bullsh!t about "white people don't know what it's like to be poor" and then buy a $600,000 house is a "big deal" because it proves he's a Democrat hypocrite and a limousine liberal who lied to a lot of young people who believed in him.

      •  Do you really think everyone in Illinois is dumb and stupid supporting crooked polititians ?........dude , get your head out of sand and recognize that things are changing , everywhere...........and so what Bernie can afford such house , he makes enough money to do that . and you should watch a vid Feathers posted and correct your statments about a man who experienced hardships of immigrant parents in new country  first hand . I am willing to speculate you didnt ...............

        • How Chicago's political machine endures corruption: One voter's story

          DECEMBER 12, 2008 |  7:04 AM

Chicago's Near North Side residential lakefront and Oak Street beach

This is a true story about Chicago's Democratic machine politics, an urban brand that has produced President-elect Barack Obama, White House chief-of-staff-designate Rahm Emanuel and now, notoriously, Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, accused of selling his nomination to a vacant U.S. Senate seat.

From a distance many observers might not understand how the state's Democratic political organization keeps getting elected for generations, when what all those people elsewhere ever hear about are corruption scandals in the Windy City or Land of Lincoln, as The Ticket detailed here Thursday.

Why wouldn't Chicago voters ever rise up and toss the rascals out?

This story concerns a young woman named Cindy. It occurred some years ago but could have happened yesterday given the constant internal regeneration of the Cook County machine, currently under the command of Mayor Richard M. Daley and about four dozen loyal aldermen, each with their own longstanding loyal organizations.

Cindy was working her way through college in night classes. After school late one evening, she went grocery shopping and was walking home on a deserted residential street on Chicago's North Side carrying two bags.

Suddenly, a disheveled man waving a kitchen knife jumped out of the bushes. He knocked her down, grabbed her purse and ran off.

Shaken, Cindy later reported it to the police, who were ...

... sympathetic but offered little hope of catching the likely drug addict.

The next morning on her way to work Cindy walked passed the crime scene, hoping perhaps to retrieve at least her discarded purse. She found nothing but approached a nearby city garbage crew working its way down the miles of back alleys that honeycomb the Windy City.

Had they by any chance seen a new, red suede purse?

Yes, said the city worker. In fact, he'd just dumped it in the truck. He'd wondered why anyone would throw such a nice thing into a garbage can. Cindy said she'd been mugged the previous night and knew the money was gone but wondered about recovering her purse.

The garbage worker told his driver, who ordered bIllinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, president-elect and former senator Barack Obama and Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley, all Democrats, in happier less legally-entangled daysoth of them into the cab. While driving to his sanitation yard, he radioed the precinct captain to explain the situation.

The captain met the crew and Cindy at the yard. He ordered the truck dumped until the purse fell out. He waded into the stinking garbage and recovered it.

Then he drove Cindy to a dry cleaners near her apartment, paid in advance for the cleaning, gave Cindy the receipt and drove her downtown to work.

There, he asked to speak to her supervisor. He explained the circumstances and asked Cindy's boss to please excuse her late arrival, which the man readily did.

The precinct captain returned to his city job.

Cindy and her boss told that story often over time. Chicagoans nod their head. People elsewhere shake their heads.

But that's not the end. Several months later, on a Saturday afternoon, the precinct captain appeared at Cindy's apartment door. He was pleased to learn that Cindy got her clean purse back and all was well. He hoped she'd vote in the election coming in 10 days.

Cindy did indeed vote in that municipal election. She enthusiastically cast her ballot to reelect the man who was mayor the awful night she got mugged.

And in Chicago that makes perfect sense

      • Let´s not distort the facts, Malcolm.....take a look at the whole picture before you judge so quickly..

´´Independent politician Bernie Sanders was born on September 8, 1941, in New York. He grew up in Brooklyn as the youngest of two sons of Jewish immigrants from Poland. His father worked as a paint salesman. As part of a struggling working-class family, Sanders recognized early on America's economic disparity. As he told the Guardian newspaper, "I saw unfairness. That was the major inspiration in my politics," he said.´´
