It looks as if science is preparing for the fact that in the near future there will be fewer and fewer cultivation areas under the open sky. Keywords here are the spreading deserts, dry summers, and natural disasters. Will the future of agriculture lie underground? Such indoor farms can hardly be operated energy efficiently, so the reason for the development can only be a possible dire future.

Indoor farms, predominantly 'stacked' hydroponics use up to 20X less water, 20X less nutrients, and require much less energy than a conventional farm does, yet produces around 30 - 50 times the yield Vs. Traditional farming. Plus we can also dispense with environmentally damaging pesticides and herbicides since the indoor environment is much easier to control.
This tech is merely a step on from that hydroponics tech.
LED lighting, recirculating water / nute mixs and a largely bug and pest free environment all contribute to a 21st century style of farming Vs what we have now, which is centuries old methodology.
We live in the 21st century, why does the prospect of 21st century thinking for farming scare people?
