Recently, there has been a lot of hype about celiac disease, also known as gluten intolerance. Many believe that it is gluten (found in most bread products) that causes an upset stomach, bloating, indigestion, and more. However, gluten occurs naturally in bread, and humans have been consuming bread for hundreds of years. Why the sudden rise in gluten intolerance now?
The Problem
The reality is that it is not gluten that is causing all of these negative reactions and health side effects, it is something else entirely. The true culprit is Roundup (the generic term for the pesticide is called glyphosate), the pesticide that is sprayed on large wheat fields just before the combines roll through and harvest the wheat. You may be thinking, why in the heck would anyone spray food with Roundup? By doing this, farmers are actually able to increase their yield in those precious last few days of the harvest because of a reaction in the wheat that the pesticide initiates. This spraying, however, is of course bad news for all of those that eat the contaminated wheat product.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture noted in 2012 that 99% of durum wheat harvests were treated with pesticides, with 97% of spring wheat and 61% of winter wheat also being sprayed. A study found in a 2013 issue of Interdisciplinary Toxicology noted an increase in celiac disease that matched perfectly with the increased use of glyphosate on wheat yields. One study published in Entropy showed that human consumption of glyphosate resulted in a disruption of the gut bacteria as well as autoimmune disorders.
While some claim that Roundup is nontoxic to mammals, the reality is that the exposure to and consumption of this pesticide over time can have drastic effects on one’s health. It is believed that prolonged exposure may contribute to obesity, onset of Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, infertility, heart disease, and disorder of the gastrointestinal tract.
What You Can Do
By now it should be obvious to you that there is a problem with the manner in which wheat in the United States is being harvested. The real question is what can you do about it? Dr. Stephanie Seneff, who has been studying this issue in depth for years, makes it clear that as long as wheat in the U.S. continues to be treated with glyphosate, it is not something you should consume. Thus, you have the option of buying foreign-grown wheat products, or making your own at home. If you opt to make your own goodies, you will still need to buy the base ingredients from a safe supplier of organic, unhybridized wheat, such as Einkorn.
Although just last year the Soil Association called for a complete ban on the use of Roundup (or any glyphosate product) on wheat crops, it is unclear if this ban is being enforced. To keep you and your family safe, only source wheat products that you know have not been treated with this harmful chemical. Unfortunately, that will mean skipping on the bread, bagels, pastries, and more that are found in stores and restaurants. But when it comes to the health and safety of your family, it’s worth the sacrifice.

If your food isn’t certified organic, you’re consuming some toxic food. Want to know why? Monsanto’s Round Up ‘pre-harvest’ spraying guide meant for conventional farmers recommends that they spray crops just three days prior to harvest – and they don’t just mean on GMO crops. This means you’re likely consuming food which had been drenched in toxic pesticides.
RoundUp, the very same Monsanto-made product which contains the recently-declared carcinogenic chemical glyphosate (along with inert ingredients that are also extremely dangerous), is sprayed on your food just before you eat it.
Which Crops Exactly?
Monsanto recommends spraying for:
Wheat
Oats
Non-GMO Canola
Flax
Peas
Lentils
Non-GMO Soybeans
Dry Beans
Sugar Cane
That amounts to just about every grocery store food you can think of – after all, what doesn’t contain wheat, oats, soy, or sugar cane just for starters?
Though of course it isn’t like these conventional foods are totally safe anyway, since they are sprayed through the growing season. What’s more, some pesticides are even genetically implanted right into the plant itself, as in the case of Bt corn. This just means that after exposing you to herbicides not once, through genetic engineering, not twice, through mass fields spraying, but at least three times when the crops are sprayed just prior to harvest.
Further, Monsanto also claims that aerial applications can be made without drift onto unwanted areas. Say what??? Almost all research on the toxicity and environmental fate of herbicides is conducted on herbicide ‘active ingredients’ only and in complete isolation. In fact:
“Aerial applications are typically made by helicopter from 60-80 feet above the target area. Because of the method of application and the chemical behavior of the mixtures used, movement of herbicides, surfactants and inert ingredients off target is both inevitable and extensive.”
Think your foods are safe from glyphosate? Not as long as farmers are spraying crops with multiple rounds of Round Up
