Called ghritam and sarpi in Sanskrit, ghee has not only been a part of the Vedic rituals but has also adored the Indian kitchen since ages. Sushruta, while elucidating the common qualities of ghee, has written that it is sweet in taste and is ‘saumya’ or cooling and mild in potency. It subdues the deranged vata and pitta. Ghee as a medicine has been used both externally and internally.

Actually classic ayurvedic literature , while telling many types of medicines to treat diseases, devotes special attention to ‘ghrit chikitsa’ – treatment with various preparations of ghee.

You must have seen people cutting Ghee (clarified butter) from their diet to maintain a fit and fabulous body. But do you know Ghee not only helps you improve your immunity but also aids digestion?

According to Ayurveda, Ghee is considered a satvic food. Satvic foods promote good health, positivity and personal growth and nothing better than Ghee.

Ghee has a host of health and cooking benefits and is good for the mind and spirit. Modern science has finally got around to proving the physical and mental health benefits of eating Ghee.

What Exactly is Ghee?

Also known as clarified butter, Ghee is formed when butter is boiled and the milk solids are removed, leaving a concentrated residue of pure fats. Like butter, it can be dangerous to your health if consumed in large quantities because of the high concentration of fat, but in small quantities it can do wonders.

Check Out the Health Benefits of Ghee:

Ghee Enables Weight Loss

Don’t be surprised. Like olive oil and coconut oil, Ghee contains healthy fats that can help you burn fat and lose weight.

Ghee Provides Energy

Ghee has a lipophilic effect on other fatty acids and fatty toxins. It gets absorbed by the liver and its simple structure makes it burn immediately. Most of us avoid eating Ghee today but it is one of the healthier sources of energy.

Ghee Reduces the Risk of Cancer, Heart Disease and Diabetes

Ghee is rich in conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a fatty acid that protects against plaque, cancer and diabetes.

Ghee lowers cholesterol

Ghee is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which lower cholesterol and boosts heart health.

Ghee is Nutritionally Rich Like Coconut Oil

One of the biggest benefits of ghee is its nutritional profile. It is rich in vitamins A and E, and ghee’s saturated fats are easier to break down than saturated fats. Despite some small differences, coconut oil and ghee are relatively similar, especially in terms of fat and calorie content.

Ghee Boosts digestion

Ghee is packed with butyric acid, a short chain fatty acid that has several benefits, one of which is better digestion. Our bodies actually convert fibre into butyric acid, so having Ghee makes the body’s job easier. Butyric acid helps heal the digestive tract and keeps it healthy.

Ghee Improves Immunity

The butyric acid in Ghee also promotes immunity by increasing the production of killer T cells.

Ghee Fights Inflammation

These days doctor suggest people to use butyrate supplements to treat inflammatory conditions. So why not use Ghee, it is a better option and is easily available.

Ghee Increases Appetite

Ghee triggers the release of gastric acid, which results in better digestion and increased appetite.

Ghee Promotes Flexibility

It’s no wonder that yogis cooked their food in Ghee; it lubricates the joints and connective tissues and promotes flexibility.

Ghee Improves Eye Health

Ghee is rich in Vitamin A, which prevents macular degeneration and cataract development.

Ghee Gives You Beautiful Babies

Loaded with Vitamin K2, it is believed that Ghee plays an important role in the development of the baby’s facial features and teeth.

Ghee Promotes Positivity

According to Ayurveda, Ghee is considered a satvic food. It promotes good health, positivity and personal growth. This is also one of the reasons elderly recommend using Ghee to light Puja lamps.

Ghee Removes Emotional Toxins

Research shows that negative emotions have a chemical composition, and that these chemicals get stored in unhealthy fats. Ghee is a healthy fat that does not harbour these emotions; instead it can be used to flush them out.

Absorbs the Nutrients in Herbs and Spices

Indian food contains several herbs and spices loaded with numerous nutrients. Ghee absorbs these nutrients better than oil and helps them reach the correct part of the body, where they are required the most.

Ghee Does Not Break Down into Free Radicals

Many oils have a low smoke point at which they break down and form free radicals. Free radicals are harmful agents that cause all sorts of disease and deterioration of the body, right from ageing to cancer. Ghee has a high smoke point (250 °C), so it doesn’t break down into free radicals while cooking.

Ghee Can be Stored Without Refrigeration

During the clarification process, the milk solid from Ghee is removed. Since only pure fat remains in Ghee, it can be stored without refrigeration for years without going bad.

Ghee Does Not Trigger Lactose Intolerance

Since the milk solids have been removed, Ghee usually doesn’t bother people who are lactose intolerant.

  • Organic Ghee or clarified butter has been recognised and highly valued by Ayurveda, the ancient medical science of India. Placed at the top of the oily foods list, Ghee is considered to be an essential part of a balanced diet. According to tradition it not only benefits the internal health of the body but also softens, strengthens and nourishes the skin.
