The filmmakers of this series argue that in the United States, the rampant use by politicians of negative propaganda to create fear of enemies such as the former Soviet Union, Communists, Al Qaeda and so on, in conjunction with positive propaganda about "free markets", "democracy", "freedom" and so on have caused massive poverty, suffering, genocide, war, coups, crushed unions and popular movements, as well as environmental destruction -- both outside and inside the United States.
