A Woman’s Stand Against Domestic Violence

Women in their homes at riskShield the men that cause them pain.Bruises hide and walk with shame,Never speak the ugly name.We see them on the streets by day.See them at work but not at play.We know, but speak not as they hideThe truth that’s buried deep inside.It’s hard for them to stand and sayThat life is far from just a game.If they speak up, and yes, some do,Chances are we turn away.To get involved is much too hardAnd something that we seldom do.We know it’s wrong – and yes, we care,But not enough their pain to share.Their children hide in bed at night,Cover their eyes and hide their frightUnder the darkness of the quilts – their lair.When the day comes, as always it must,We find we have our cross to bear,We cry,”Dear God – does no one care.”He does, but we will find,With no one else to help us throughThe darkness of the night of pain.The strength He gives is not without,But deep within our own life’s spark.It’s a terrible thing that we must learnThat others watch or walk away;Leave us there to fight and struggleAs away their eyes they turn.There are women in this town of ours,I say it’s more than one or two,I hear them crying in the nightFor things that happened years ago.I see them come, bloodied and bruised,But all we offer is a short refuge.A place where they can spend one nightAnd then return to their world of fright.“She should leave.” We often say.What do we know of the games men play?”I’m sorry” soon runs out of time,Meaningless words when the tempers rise,Or the bottles come out, or the jobs fall through,Or the words,”Look at what you made me do.”For the umpteenth time are heard.They look at their children in their bedsAnd their hearts are filled with dread.Even a woman in a position of power,Quails inside as the tempers rise,Knowing full well that the time will comeWhen tempers are lost and the bell is rung.The worst they face is not always fistsBut words and tones to break their spirit.They believe their men, who say they do it for loveAnd seldom see till later daysThat love should give – not take awayTheir strengths and gifts and love of self.To walk away in this world of oursIs not an easy task.The money earned is not enoughTo pay the bills when the partner spurnedChooses the path of financial deprivationTo bring about her subjugation.So women stay – or walk awayFrom everything.The weaker sex they say we are,But the strength we show with the pains we bearTo bring our children to the world we shareBelies that fact without a doubt.The time will come for all to learnThe other cheek we will not turnWhen things get tough and we choose to standAgainst the bullying of a man.I speak the truth.Yes, hear it clear.Next time you think an injustice doneJust stop to think,It could be your daughter -Or your son.

Amazing poem Alexis. Every year my school does a fundraiser for a battered moms shelter, which women with children can go to when they want to, and are able to, escape from their abusive spouses. This hits home for me! Again, amazing poem.
