Dr. Vandana Shiva (born 5 November 1952) is an Indian scholar, environmental activist, food sovereignty advocate, and anti-globalization author. Shiva, currently based in Delhi, has authored more than twenty books.
Vandana Shiva on the coronavirus:
As we destroy the habitat and homes of wild species, we violate the integrity of species and create the conditions for communicable diseases to move from non-human animals to human animals. As we manipulate animals in factory farms and genetically manipulate plants, we create the conditions for non-communicable chronic diseases. The industrial system is anti-nature, unhealthy and non-sustainable.
We need to discard policies and practices that degrade the food system, destroy our health, and endanger the planet’s ecological stability. We are risking the biogenetic survival of life on the planet.
This particular health emergency is forcing us to deglobalize. We can do it when there is a pollical will. Let us make this de-globalization permanent. Let us make a transition to localization, while remembering we are one Earth Family on a single planet.
