L. Ron Hubbard and the Origins of Scientology
Before he founded Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard was a prolific science-fiction writer and a World War II Navy veteran. After the war, Hubbard described serious psychological difficulties and began searching for answers about the human mind.
In 1950, he published Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health, introducing the concepts of the reactive mind, engrams, auditing and the goal of becoming Clear.
But Hubbard's ideas didn't stop with the human mind.
Within a few years, Dianetics evolved into Scientology, a spiritual system centered around the concept of the thetan—the immortal spiritual being Hubbard said was the true individual.
This documentary follows that remarkable evolution, from Hubbard's early life and postwar struggles to the development of Dianetics, the Bridge to Total Freedom, Clear and the Operating Thetan levels.
We also examine OT III, the Wall of Fire, Hubbard's account of Xenu the extraterrestrial, and the controversial teachings concerning body thetans.
How did Hubbard say he discovered these extraordinary ideas? What did Scientologists actually believe and practice? And how did a system that began as a theory about the human mind become one of the world's most controversial religious movements?
This is the story of L. Ron Hubbard and the evolution of Scientology.
Watch to the end and decide for yourself.
