What is the “Fourth Turning”?
William Strauss and Neil Howe proposed that American history moves through recurring roughly 80-year cycles, divided into four periods:
- The High — stability, confidence and institutional strength.
- The Awakening — cultural and spiritual rebellion.
- The Unraveling — declining institutional authority and increasing individualism.
- The Crisis / Fourth Turning — severe political, economic and social conflict that eventually produces a major restructuring of society.
They identified three previous American Fourth Turnings:
- American Revolution: roughly 1773–1789
- Civil War: roughly 1860–1877
- Great Depression/World War II: roughly 1929–1945
The theory says the present period represents a fourth major crisis.
Why do people think we're in one now?
The current interpretation generally points to 2008 as the catalyst—the financial crisis and Great Recession—followed by increasingly intense political polarization, institutional distrust, COVID-19, racial unrest, immigration conflicts, geopolitical tensions and economic pressures.
The original theory has been modified somewhat by Neil Howe in his newer work. His website now explicitly says “The Fourth Turning is here” and describes the present period as one of civic upheaval and national mobilization.
